From memory: bottle. Pours nearly black, though not opaque. First whiff, smells simply of classic Belgium yeast. Clean and focused. Palate is also clean, round and smooth. Classic saison flavors, though made in a very crowd-friendly manner. Not to bitter, not to sour, and not to funky... I was hard-pressed to find much smoke in this beer.. Maybe a hint of ash.. Which wasn't disappointing, as I was enjoying the beer just as it was... I would simply consider this a "Black Saison", as the smoke is not prominent. A good beer.

Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of smoke, roastiness, charcoal, citrus, pepper and light yeast. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of smoke, roastiness, earthiness, pepper and light yeast with a crisp dry lingering smokey finish. LilBeerDoctor (3904) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 11, 2012
Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of clove, anise, yeast, melon rind, and a hint of hops and roasted malt. Flavor of roasted malt, Belgian spices, and bitter hops in the finish. Roasty and tasty, I quite enjoyed it.

12oz bottle from "Lifesource" Salem.
Black beer with a nice tan head..lovely.
Nice smokey aromas..like crispy roasted ham , a hint of saison and some light hop.
Taste is more sweet grapefruit hop and a little saison dryness..the smoke for some reason is not so pleasing inn the taste as it was in the nose..more ashy.
Nice juicy mouthfeel.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a Unibroue tulip, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like roasted malt, smoke, coffee, peppery spice, and some bittersweet chocolate. It tastes like roasted malt, earthy hops, vanilla, coffee, peppery spice, smoke, bittersweet chocolate, and a bit of dark fruit. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit coating and has good carbonation. To me it seems more like a porter or a stout than a saison, but I’m not complaining. I thought this was a good brew overall. $3.99 a bottle.

Completely unique beer in my experience. Has the dry grassiness of a saison as well as smoke and roast. Body is much lighter than you would expect from those flavors. Dry finish. andyhwcinc (1884) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 29, 2012
Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a lazy Saturday afternoon while doing some errands. Appearance is a moderate, pitch black with a thin white head that laces to the glass. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, light yeast, also a touch of roasted malt. Taste is pretty good, definite smoke presence with a light yeast flavor, also a very light touch of fruit and hops. I don’t know how to classify this one, doesn’t really taste like a saison to me. Still pretty good. argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 3, 2013
Draft. Pillowy brown head, cola-black body, nice lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet, pepper, roast, spicy, some funk. Taste is moderately sweet, roast, caramel, some funk, lemon, light pepper, smoke. Medium body, somewhat dry finish. luttonm (6169) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JAN 5, 2013
12oz bottle in Seattle. Very interesting project, strange style but it seems to work alright. Pretty pour, deep slightly funky malts, sweetness, peat. Medium body, black saison style all the way, some wet smoked fish/meat flavors in the back. Doesn’t get better as it warms, but tasty and smart. Balanced beer, maybe not exactly a style to aim for though. Worth a taste. EvanFriend (581) - Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 11, 2013
Pretty cool beer. Sour/spicy yeast notes mixed in with roasted/slightly smokey notes, plus some Stone hoppiness.
