Bottle from Best Damn Beer Shop: Aroma is subtle with not a lot to smell other than a minor scent of yeast, spice and charred wood log. Appearance was a dark brown that was completely opaque while a foamy head breaks down in short time. Flavor is mild with chances of dark roast malts but I was unable to find any traces of smoke or that it was even a saison for that matter. Boring and bland yet perfectly balanced and an interesting concept of blackening a saison. Keyes88 (60) - New Jersey, USA - JAN 17, 2013
Pouts a near black body with reddish hued edges. Smells of dulled smoke with some faint funk. Very bread and malt flavor with a nice blend of smoke and spice. Great mouthfeel with the flavor. Interesting take on Saison.

Pours opaque black with brown highlights. Slight sour anise on the nose. Starts off with the fruit of a saison, followed by the burnt malt flavor of a black ipa and mild pepper, ending with the aftertaste of black licorice. Interesting mix of styles and flavor rougeau13 (3156) - Richmond, Texas, USA - JAN 20, 2013
Dark brown-amber with a moderate beige head. Filmy lacing. Aroma of yeast, roast, and sweet fruit. Smoke dominates the taste, and there is an elevated level of bitterness for a saison. It’s got a weird, and a little bit muddy flavor, but it’s still pretty good. Medium bodied and dry. Not bad; different. Lubiere (14133) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 21, 2013
A deep dark brown saison with a thin super lacing mocha head. In aroma, a smooth sweet caramel malt with light peated notes, rye, coriander, orange peels, thyme and Brett notes. In mouth, a smooth chocolate roasted malt, with coriander, curacao, Brett and licorice notes, dry and powdery, very nice. On tap at Barcade NJ, Dec. 31 2012.

It was ok but not nearly as good as their Saison du Buff. The smoked flavor kind of ruined it for me.

This... is a complex one. Spicy and slightly smoky aroma. Pours a dark brown with red highlights. Drinks smoothly with strong coffee flavor. Finishes with smoke and hop bitterness. Very interesting brew. ccex (1350) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 11, 2013
12 oz bottle pours a dark brown/black with small khaki head and some lacing. Aroma is a peculiar mix of Belgian yeast, dark roasted malts, raisins, cherries, spices, and smoke. Taste is initially sweet/tart fruits with an earthy/funky dry finish and lingering smoke. Body is light to medium with average carbonation. An interesting experimental mix of a saison, a black IPA, and a smoked beer. gorditoabd (636) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 25, 2013
12 oz from bev4less. Pours dark mahogany hue with a thin, but lacy off-white foam head. Straight away the nose is of dark malt and hops. Lots of dark bittering hops. Chocolate and coffee notes are also present. Even more coffee in the first sip, very roasty malty flavor on this one... the hop bitterness from the nose has settled into the background a bit. Is it a saison? Not so much... a black IPA? Maybe... but, of course, I’m sure the recipe grain bill and yeast would prove me wrong. Still, something about this one screams black ipa, or even robust porter. Mouthfeel is a little thin on this one, in spite of the richness of the flavor package. Clings decently well to the tongue, but on the underside. Anyway, it’s good... but not as interesting as the description made out. NikkTwist (3303) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 5, 2013
Bottle at Eulogy. Very, very dark orange brown pour with some little foamy circling galaxies. Dark Saison with some smoke. Burnt celery. Raisin pie. Cigarettes. Molasses. Rotted pears. Thyme. Smoked salmon. A sweet juicy black syrupy floral stout. Also a touch of sour and smoke. Thick palate. Hard to define. More complex than the other "Dark Saisons" I have had. Very interesting, well made and thought out. Just not sure if I really like drinking it.
