Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all it must taste rare!

Heathen (1500) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - JUN 28, 2013
THOUGHTS: Could smell this one the second the first hiss escaped from the bottle as I began to pry the cap off. Hid alcohol very well for the high ABV. It was noticeable but not at all harsh. Very intense but rather smooth. Even better tasting as it warmed. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured an opaque black with a small, light brown head that was almost reddish and nearly fully diminished. The aroma had heavy roasted malts, coffee, chocolate syrup and very dark chocolate; hints of banana; raisin; prune; cherry;port; hints of smoke and wood; light alcohol; and dark fruits. The initial flavor was moderate to heavily sweet, and slightly bitter and acidic; while the finish was heavily sweet, moderately bitter and ever so slightly sour. There was chocolate syrup, dark chocolate, dark fruit, hints of bacon, alcohol, prune, raisin, roasted malt, coffee, cherry dark fruit, and burnt malt. The full body was oily and sticky on the lips with soft yet rather tingly carbonation and a slightly alcoholic finish.

3 finger tan coloured head. Opaque, pitch black beer. Aroma is chocolate, oatmeal, toffee, vanilla, coffee and hazelnuts with hints of vanilla and bourbon. Taste is dark roasted coffee, hazelnuts, toffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and burnt brown sugar with hints of bourbon. Thick but couldve used a bit more initial kick. Lovely sting on the tongue and a pleasant alcohol burn on both the palate and the throat. The alcohol is noticable but in the best way possible, with oaky and smokey whiskey notes. Medium-high bitterness. Cant tell if it has medium carbonation or if the beer just burns on the lips. Great mouthfeel either way. Overall: I hereby give my trust to Evil Twins stouts. This one has a great dark, roasted spectrum of flavours while still having a relatively sweet taste, but just the right amount. Fantastic nose too.
