Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Nose and taste of pine, resin, dusty cocoa, grapefruit, roasted chocolate malt and roasted coffee. Medium body. Finishes bitter cocoa and resin. Hints of wild yeast.
Bomber sized bottle consumed at Jackpot Junction on the final day of family reunion weekend. An excessive amount of head on this one. Below the tan colored froth is a pitch black beer. Aroma is big on Brett characteristics with a little funk working well with dark, roasty qualities. It’s an interesting contrast between the aroma and the visual. Taste continues to be complex with a roasty, malty wallop that hides in the weeds of the earthy, funky Brett until the very end. Lingering heavy bitterness. This one shows no signs of making its exit anytime soon. The beginning and middle have the tart, dark fruit characteristics. This is one of the more unique beers I’ve sampled. Bomber from West Side. Pour a deep brown to black with purple hues and a big, soapy tan head that dissipates quickly. Lots of dark, roasted malt aromas, with some molasses and earthy brett. Dry on the palate, with more woodsy brett, roasted, dry charcoal and faint plum. Deep dark brown hue with a large foamy rocky light beige cap. Dark roasty and slightly smokey aroma with a little bitter leafy hop presence and Belgian dustiness. Rich flavor that’s dark and robust and a touch smokey with some bright leafy and piney bitterness, and a dark Belgian saison ester and Belgian dusty funk. Lots of darkness and roast and funky saison tones with a dark bitterness that’s piney at its heart but actually comes across as kinda tasty.

Approximately half of a 22 oz. bottle, consumed on 3-25-17. Purchased about a month ago at a steep discount, so, although there is no “Best By” date, I suspect this beer is past whatever it would be. Pours dark brown with an excessive amount of fluffy, uneven, beige head. Produces good, thick lacing, and it would be a good-looking beer if the head weren’t so darn voluminous. Berry and chocolate scents. The smell reminds me of chocolate-covered blueberries. A fruit-sweet potpourri, almost like a strongly fruit-scented soap in the aroma. Rather strange in smell, not bad but not at all what I was expecting. Roasted malt flavor. Pretty dry in taste. Some raspberry; mixed berry fruitiness increases on multiple sips. Cherry cordial candy. It does strike me that this might have had more hops bite closer to the time it was bottled, but I think it holds up reasonably well. That said, it’s not all that good. I’m not a fan of berry notes in IPAs, and, although this is the first time I can remember encountering them, it seems that I’m not a fan of berry notes in black IPAs either. Medium body. Soft in the palate. Probably a bit undercarbonated, as the carbonation emerges in the head. Underwhelming palate effects. kindly shared by Daniel @ CBCB tasting, thanks a lot for another species of this series so clearly (one additional point) identifiable as one. Again this nose of young brett, fruity, grapefruity against a background of that typical ultra-fresh towel cleanness of all the serie’s releases. 22 oz bottle served in a goblet.
Opened with a pronounced pfffft but did not overflow. The pour did raise an over-sized head. Very good retention.
The aroma and flavor reveal a substantial influence of Brett, and the Brett dominates the aftertaste. I have little tolerance for Brett, so this pretty much ruined the beer for me. The base black IPA seems about average in malt/hop balance and strength, but perhaps more bitter than usual.

Leather and bandaid nose. Mahogany, thick tan head, good lace. Coffee, plum, bandaid. Medium body, soft carbonation. Older bottle and either brett doesn’t work with the malt bill or there are some other bugs. This was unpleasant.
