3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a nearly pitch black color. The head stands tall at three fingers high, khaki shaded. Texture-wise, it seems more soapy than creamy, but still, this has good retention for a 10% beer. Some spotty patches of lacing are left behind.
S: This has a lot of licorice for my tastes. Seriously, a lot. Apart from that, this beer still brings the roast, still brings the chocolate, and even brings something resembling peat. There’s even some slight citrusy hops floating around. Even with all the aniseed, this has a very appealing aroma.
T: I said the aroma brings the roast. Well, that’s not the case here - because it REALLY brings the roast, like a charred sledgehammer. The roasted notes are mainly clustered near the finish; before that, it starts with a combination of fruitiness and licorice. It also finishes with slight wisps of chocolate and booze (just enough to add to the experience, mind). I’m really enjoying how charred the roasted malts are in particular.
M: It starts off really dry finishing in spite of the creamy body, and combined with its slightly thin body, gives it great drinkability. The finish becomes becomes a lot wetter as more is consumed - it’s almost like said feature is an omen for me to stop slamming this. Too bad, because I absolutely adore a slammable imperial stout (Black Albert, anyone?) Carbonation is medium.
O: Make no mistake, this is really damn good. A bit pricey for me to purchase this frequently, though. Highly recommended for roast lovers.
