COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our winter seasonal is a nod to the classic altbiers of Dusseldorf. A full, toasty malt profile is countered by generous additions of German Hops. Well balanced but assertively hopped, this complex but approachable beer is ideal for shaking off the chill of winter.

THOUGHTS: Nice crisp beer. Lots of malt nicely balanced by the hops. Dark copper like a dirty penny Not really the best style for winter. It was more transitional to me. Like Summer into Fall or Winter into Spring. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy, dark copper with an average, creamy, off-white head that mostly diminished and left excellent lacing. The aroma had moderate caramel, biscuit, toasted and nutty malts; light floral, perfumy and spicy hops; and some fruitiness. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and bitter; while the finish was heavily sweet and moderately bitter with an average duration. There was toasted malts, hints of caramel, sharp herbal and earthy hops, floral and perfumy hops, a little biscuit, a little fruit, and yeast bread. The medium body was sort of creamy then dry with very tingly carbonation and a metallic finish.

DATE: January 14, 2018... OCCASION: easing into the second half of Sunday after the Steelers were eliminated from the playoffs... GLASSWARE: Ayinger willibecker... pours a triple finger's worth of off-white froth that leaves cracks and crevices; the body is a chestnut brown, translucent body with tiny bubbles evincing life... bright, fresh Hallertau and noble hops create an aromatic, flowery scent with apple cider, toasted malts, herbal tea and light nuts... light to medium-bodied, lightly crunchy, with a metallic finish that lingers pleasantly... light acidity, bringing a hint of orange peel to the fore... the focal point of the flavor profile is the toasted malts, which make for a working man's draught... beautiful white lacing that evokes a skier's snow trail... apple, tree nut, and some odd lagerish sweet caramel makes for an uneven payoff... up until the taste, this beer was moving in the right direction; at about half-glass, it becomes a bit bitter and offish... a slightly creamy consistency makes this more attractive, but the overall takeaway is a clean, easy-drinking malt-forward alt that keeps some of its promises....

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2017 Haven’t found many altbiers around so I had to jump on this one. Pours a clear reddish brown with a tan foamy head. Aroma is subtly fruity with a dark Roasted note. Taste is malt forward with the dark roasted bitterness in the finish. In the middle there’s a good amount of earthy hop flavor. Mouthfeel could be smoother but the flavor is great.

I like this style variation for a winter ale...which I find most of them too sweet or over-spiced. Also find altbiers a little bland or off-balanced. This one has some hops to it which offsets the sweetness, and gives some decent bitterness at the end. Flavor of caramel, grain, bread, winter spice, and hop finish. Has an unfiltered hazy medium brown. Was hesitant to sample this at first, but actually is one of the better winter seasonals I had in the last couple years.

Rich amber body with a nice caramel, creamy head. Enjoyable malty aroma with slightly woody notes. The body is malty, well balanced and with the characteristic altbier undercurrent of aged woodiness. Easy drinking.
