Surprised and a little let down to see this one pasteurised, filtered and bottled in clear bottles. Oddly it poured quite still, the cap come off with little more sound than the crimping of metal upon glass. A translucent midnight brown with a thinning cap of tan that took some rousing. There is a strong waft of kelp amongst notes of cocoa, dusty earth, stewed plums and chocolate. Mostly dry, chalky palate, good body and very minimal carbonation. A little vanilla and chocolate icecream up front before some smoky burnt wood and heavily toasted grains. Burnt stonefruit in back and just a hint of damp bitter weeds. Finish is all chocolate malts and more ashen wood. Fairly simple stuff. More sessionable than the ABV suggests giving me the impression it could pull off more at a lower alcohol content. Bottle from Ales By Mail. Very dark brown colour, reasonable head. Fruity caramel aroma. Fruity malt flavour. A bit watery. Doesnt feel like a 6.6% beer.

Gorgeous stuff. Quite a strong ale with a very smooth finish. Hints of toffee and hops on the smell front. Taste is rich and smooth hops with a slight metallic twang which disappears after the second gulp. Not too gassy. Goes great with a bit of Emmental cheese. Top ale! One of my faves.

[500ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Dark, chestnut brown pour from a clear glass bottle. Fruity chocolate aromas, with some sherry or rum notes. Raisins and chocolate on the palate with a touch of caramel sweetness. On the finish reminiscent of fruit cake, with that slight rum/sherry note as well [29052009]

(pasterurised bottle). A clear bottle=fucking skunkiness, with subtle Fuggle hops..plastic ..roast coffee, earthiness. A cloying Porter. On the sweet side ...some rich roast coffee.red wine covered in chocolate. THE clear glass bottle basically takes a shit on a plesant porter.
