Alengrin (4713) - BELGIUM - AUG 12, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 13, 2014 Another Italian micro brewery with fine artisanal ales, in this case predominantly Belgian by style. This one pretends to be a saison and boasts an enormous, off-white, rocky head (caught after gushing) that nevertheless quickly decreases, and a misty, warm orange blonde hue - so far indeed saison-like. Powerful yeasty aroma, caramel, bread, gingerbread, orange juice, lemon peel, vanilla, field flowers, jute, paper, white pepper... Again very consistent with the saison style. Taste citrussy with sharp spicy notes (pepper, ginger) and strong, tingling carbonation, orange peel, yeasty, soft sweetish malts, bit nutty, sweetish, finishing in a herbal and grassy, bit peppery hoppiness, bit harsh ending also due to the strong carbonation (not that surprising in view of the gushing). In short: though a bit over-carbonated, this brew has understood the essence of the saison style very well. Very curious to meet the other Extraomnes beers.

My Bottom Line:
Banana esters, hay-like cereals, bready yeast and herbal hops coalesce in this beautifully expressive and supple Saison.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A dollop of foam decorates the misty golden.
-Mild tartness accompanies the noble hop finish.
-Citrusy fruitiness splashes the second half of each sip.
-All flavours are intertwining perfectly.
-The tap version was as good, if not better, than the bottled version.

Bottle and on tap at Brasserie 4:20.

Pale blond from draft, no foam, fermentation not okay with bad tones of yeast in the aroma. Light body, yeast, light hops, too yeasty, flat.

330 ml bottle from beer-shop.it served in a tulip glass. Rich sunrise orange, slightly hazy, with a fluffy and persistent off-white head. Looks great. Quite hoppy nose, well complemented by all the others saison qualities: rye bread, flowers, pepper and spicy yeast notes. Moderately sweet and as expected quite dry. Slightly bitter and peppery as well, with a citric aftertaste. Average carbonation, medium body and creamy texture. Ironically, less "traditional" (in my opinion) than other Extraomnes saisons, but still pretty tasty.

Colore paglierino opalino, al palato fieno sentore erbaceo, rotondit del sapore ma un amaro insolitamente persistente
