Once you go black IPA you don’t go back IPA

Falls City’s Black IPA is dark in color, with a prominent “Northwest” hoppy aroma – citrusy, piney and resinous – with sweet malt, hints of roastiness and toasted malt. The flavors strike a beautiful balance between citrusy Northwest hops and, to a lesser degree, roasted, chocolate malt or caramel notes. Despite its rich color, the body is more reminiscent of an India Pale Ale, not heavy like a porter or stout.

Tap sample at IBGWF 2013. Poured black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and resin hop with a small alcohol aroma. Medium body with a dry slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium dark bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good beer.

This is essentially a brown ale. Lacking in almost every aspect. Light flavors, very light on the hops. It’s malty and yeasty.

Draught at Alltech fest Reddish brown color (not black!). Lack of distinct hop profile in nose or in body. Roasty chocolate throughout.

Draft: Pours a clear deep brown-red with a soapy, off-white head. Cocoa, orange-peel scent. Chocolate, light, bitter citrus peel taste. Not bad, just not enough coffee notes for my taste in the style. More of a hopped-up brown or porter.

Kentucky Fried Charleston Trip Beer #39. Draft at Country Boy. Pours a clear dark brown-red color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, an odd bubblegum-like note, mild floral and earthy hops. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate, cherries, citrus, herbal hops. Medium bodied. 100th Black IPA ratings!

Aroma: (4- below average) Chocolate, dusty cocoa, coffee- but no hops in the nose. Appearance: (3- average) Black with slightly bubbly mocha head. Flavor: (5- average) Nose; nice malt qualities, but just hardly any hop presence- maybe a little floral or earth? Maybe I’m just imagining that this isn’t a solid porter? Palate: (3- average) Medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation, astringent finish. Overall: Not a bad beer per se, but not a Black IPA in hardly any sense. Re- label this a porter and it would be Falls City’s best beer (IMO).

Good. Pure black with light tan head.aroma is smokey and acrid. Taste is not overly bitter, but overly balanced to the bitter. Reminds me of a camp fire.

On tap at Mellow Mushroom in St. Matthews. Pours black with a light tan one finger head and plenty of lacing. Aroma of hops, roasted malts, and chocolate. Taste is a very nice balance of hops and roasted malts up front with chocolate, coffee and black liquorice. Very crisp and refreshing. Long finish with the chocolate really coming through in the aftertaste. Full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Probably the best black IPA I have had since the Stone 15th Anniversary, which is one of my all time favorites. Top notch job by Falls City on this one! I really hope they start bottling this soon!
