Pours dark brown, hazy, beige head that dissappears quickly. Aroma is chocolate powder, cardboard, and some caramel. Flavor is heavy on the cocoa and cardboard but also shows some nice caramel flavors, a hint of banana, and some light spice flavor. Not bad but definitely past it’s peak. Thanks Jason.

Thanks to Carl for sharing this old Fantome with me. I’ll take some backlog liberties so I can enter this as saison #100. After reviewing my notes and reading OldMrCrow’s review, I’d actually just direct you to read that instead, since my comments here add nothing new.

Okay, if you insist: Dark murky orange. Aroma is ... odd. Herbal, aged barley wine with an odd Dorito cheese dust thing going on. Taste doesn’t improve Herbal, cardboard, ... Meh. After reading a related review (thanks denverLogan -- I’d drink with you one of these days), I now also get the aged strawberry soda buried beneath cardboard. Also sports a creepy ass label.

We drank this last week, and for some reason I thought it’d be nice to save some for beastiefan, so MrCrow poured some into a swing top and sent it home with me. Beastie declined, but I didn’t want to let him off the hook, so I challenged him to 1-on-1 basketball, loser takes the beer. Which is why I’m now drinking a flatter, more oxidized version of the beer described above. And you know, if you think of this more as an odd, very old barley wine instead of an odd, very old saison ... well, it changes nothing, except to reinforce that I really need to step up my basketball game.

Bottle shared with Chris.

Rich hazy brown pour, decent carbonation and head even after all this time. Aged cheese hops - not even cheese, Chris points out, dorito dust! Flavor is pretty terrible. Some combination of cardboard, not the in mere sense of hey this tasteless cardboard that we usually use as a beer descriptor, but real honest to god chewy-ass cardboard. Denverlogan notes strawberry soda on another of the old Fantomes; I didn’t catch this myself, but it’s totally there. Funny! I certainly hope that this one has seen better days. It’s not much to write home about now (though fun to have been able to try).

Back at it, reviewing from notes. Purchased and opened at Fantomefest 2014. Pours a murky brownish color with a faint ring of foam around the glass. Nose is oxidation, earth, dirt, and light pepper. Flavor follows the nose with some earthy bitterness, spice, light cardboard, and a touch of pepper. Lighter mouthfeel that is dry with good carbonation and a moderate finish. Of the 3 BBB beers we opened, this was my least favorite. Love the artwork on this bottle though and it was a treat to try.

750ml bottle. Golden / amber pour with a larger sized off white head. Lots of caramel, some earth, and spices. Showed its age a bit, but grew on me the more I drank it and as it opened up.

(Rating #4088)

Pours a murky dark amber color with a small off-white head. Heavy on the cardboard aroma and lots of blue cheese. A bit of caramel, toast, and yeast. Maybe some pepper. Sweet caramel flavor followed by lots of cardboard.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2012 Bottle courtesy of sincereNc. Thanks a BUNCH, Ian!
Pours a gorgeous, translucent burnished bronze, and is topped by a creamy beige head. Aroma is peppery candied ginger with a sweet, but elegant, sake-like graininess. Flavor reveals the nose, and adds notes of sandalwood, sherry, toasted pumpkin seeds, earthy mushroom mustiness, and a tarragon-like herbal quality. Mouthfeel is velvety, and the light hops cut the emerging sweetness for a nice, semi-dry finish. Really like the 6.4% instead of Dany’s typical 8%. This bottle was phenomenal.

Thanks to Beerlando for sharing this one! Classic Fantome funkiness on the nose with a strong maltiness. Pours amber blonde with a thin white head. Peppery, funky, with some caramel, malty, a slight minty flavor with hints of marhmellow. Awesome.

Bottle courtesy of dkachur on 03/14/2009. Somewhat hazy dark amber body with ruby highlights. Sweet caramel with some earthy malt. Big caramel and earthy malt flavor, some light spicy hints. Medium body with moderate carbonation.
