COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once described as a Belgian Irish-style stout, Black Ghost has undergone lots of changes over the years. It now bears no resemblance whatsoever to a stout, and brewer Dany Prignon has begun adding spices to the beer. What they are is anybody’s guess...the Fantôme confounds once again.

Bottle bought some place I don’t remember. Etre perhaps... Pours murky yellowish brown with a huge creamy goldenish offwhite head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is tiny sour, funky and tiny malty with crispbread, lemon juice, moist soil, barnyard, leather, liquorice root, black pepper corns and hints of moist mouldy basement. Taste is tiny bitter, slightly sour and funky with burnt toast, lemon juice, orange peal, grapefruit rinds, moist soil, codweb, pepper corns, St Johns wort, barnyard, leather, dark grapes, plums, liquorice root and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, dry, tart and medium bodied. finish is bitter, tiny sour, malty and funky with burnt toast, crispbread, hay, moist soil, pepper corns, leather, barnyard and grape skins.

Bottle. Unclear brown and highly effervescent producing a large frothy light brown/beige head. Light oud bruin at first with some wooden notes, barnyard, very light glue then more of a dry stout kind of finish with some cocoa and earthy hops. Also spices that I am too lazy and stupid to decipher, could be cloves and coriander. Pretty dry finish, light bitterness. Soft on the palate with gentle carbonation. Acid reflux after the last sip, wonderful. I’ll probably wet my bed too, I’m scared of ghosts.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2013 Hazy amber-red with a huge off-white head. Aroma of spices, citrus, some leather, black pepper, yeast, marmite. Light sweet with a tartness and a bit sour. Really nice saison.

haukur (1957) - Reykjavik, ICELAND - OCT 6, 2013
Delightfully strange brew. Pours a huge head, barn and funk dominate the aroma, which is as funky as it gets. Extremely dry finish. Another winner for me from Fantome

Eructoblaster (4205) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 14, 2013
Bottle - 750ml. Opaque caramel body with a good off-white foamy head. Sharp hoppy aroma with citrusy, spicy, and flowery hints. Its strong hoppy taste carries grainy, herbal, and pepperish notes. Ends with a long, sharp, dry sour finish. A bit weird, but not bad.

Garrold (5265) - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - JUL 12, 2013
Bottle from Dram Shop, Sheffield. Took the cap off and the cork started to work itself loose! Very lively, yeasty bits and bobs all over the place. Murky brown with a thick, lasting beige head. Not a lot of aroma other than a saisson sourness. Tastes of sour apple, a hint of dark fruit. Very faint spicy, possibly cinnamon aftertaste. Quite a bonkers beer, really. No less than you’d expect?
