COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once described as a Belgian Irish-style stout, Black Ghost has undergone lots of changes over the years. It now bears no resemblance whatsoever to a stout, and brewer Dany Prignon has begun adding spices to the beer. What they are is anybody’s guess...the Fantôme confounds once again.

MakeItDrinkIt (66) - Portland, Oregon, USA - SEP 27, 2008
Copper brown color with a medium to thick light tan head. Aroma is lightly sweet, a touch yeasty and a bit of toasted grains and caramel. Flavor is initially slightly sweet, then a touch of sour shows up quite quickly. Flavors of caramel, honey and the tart edge of pie cherries (though no cherry flavors are prevailent). Finish is clean, refreshing and leaves you longing for another taste.

750ml bottle pours dark, dark brown with a reddish tinge. Aroma carries a funky barnyard nose of black pepper, cherry, raisens, molasses, maybe fruitcake. Flavor is typical Fantome funkiness, woody, barnyard hay, yeasty spice, some dark syrupy sweetness. Peppery finish with vanilla and caramel notes lingering. Another fantastic beer from Fantome. My only quandary is why is this labeled as a Belgian stout, because I could taste no evidence of the sort.

JaBier (7973) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - SEP 18, 2016
Several years old bottle shared by a friend. Pours hazy amber to copper with a medium tan head. Malty and funky nose with slight dark fruit. Malty and caramelly flavor with some fruit before a funky finish.

Backlog rate from 27/11/13, tasting at RichTheVillan’s. Murky dark greyish brown, sharp funky notes on the nose. Slight sweetness, some roast flavours, spice, brett funk and acidity, some citrus. Very spritzy. Complex and interesting but not the most satisying.

"Pours slightly murky brown, lighter than the average porter. Slightly tart fruity aroma, though some chocolate and roasted malts are in there too. Prickly feel. No sign of abv. Flavor is pretty well balance between light funk and English brown type matinees. Nice enough though I was expecting more."

Oh boy, more torture. Ugh. Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a snifter and a tulip. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange to somewhat off color brown. One finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. The smell had some burnt off barnyard funky soured oranges. The taste was basically the same. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with not much sessionability to me as it’s just too damn leathery and tart and sour. Overall, I’m hoping my abuse from this brewery is in sight but it’s not.
