Draft. Less black than dark purple. I can’t see through it, but the edges do give up some scarlet hues. Half a finger of sudsy, cocoa-colored foam on top grips the sides of the glass in full walls. Pine, dark chocolate, toast and grapefruit peel in the nose. Not much else, but you don’t need much else. Clean. In the flavor, it’s almost as if more of the bitterness is coming from the roasted malts than is coming from the hops. Pine and orange peel meld with bitter toast and cocoa. Very roasty, almost like a hoppy stout. Smooth medium body, zesty carbonation. Almost peppery heat from hops. Not mind-blowing, but solid. 3 Caytinator (1005) - Waco, Texas, USA - SEP 2, 2013
Pint on tap. Fancy beer! Nice looking black beer with a small tan head and good lacing. Pleasant aroma, some toast & roasts, but mostly clean. The blackness is there but held in check by copious malts. Nice work. DesertDevil (699) - Arizona, USA - AUG 18, 2013
On tap at the brewery in a snifter. Heavy roasted malt nose with licorice and a touch of phenols. Pours a clear black with an off-white head. Like the aroma, the taste features lots of roast with a prominent coffee tone and just the right amount of hop bitterness on the back end. Medium body (but on the lighter side); very drinkable for a black IPA. The thing I enjoy the most is the lack of an extremely dry, astringent finish that plagues so many black IPAs. Another top-notch brew by Fate. GT (10002) - San Diego, California, USA - AUG 17, 2013
Growler thanks to dcschiller. Thick rocky tan foam atop clear deep red to black. Nose is excellent pellet hops, savory, pithy durian, roast. Taste is dry, hoppy, dusty, nutty, dusty cocoa. Solid. barn0216 (550) - California, USA - AUG 16, 2013
Dark brown with a slight reddish hue, nice creamy foam. Piney aroma, same flavor. Not getting much of the "black". Good as an ipa.

UPDATED: AUG 19, 2013 Growler, thanks daknole! Pours deep ruby black with a fast dissipating tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is citrus, pine, just a touch of roast. Flavor is the same, very light sweetness, medium bitter. Much more an IPA than a black IPA (color notwithstanding), but nice nonetheless. Fairly light body. A dark brown ipa with a thin mocha head. In aroma, smooth chocolate with nice floral hops, pungent, light catty notes, nice. In mouth, a nice chocolate malt, piney hops, citrus pulp, very nice. BOLTZ7555 (3027) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - AUG 4, 2013
Dark ponderosa bark pour with a small eggshell/latte pour. Nice roasted coffee, caramel, grapefruit pith and lemon zest, cocoa, and evergreen. Not as bright, citrusy, or green as I’d like in the style. Wanted this to light me up but only got a little rise out of me. Not as exciting or assertive as I had hoped for. kcorum10 (437) - Idaho, USA - APR 19, 2013
UPDATED: JUL 31, 2013 Had this the day it was released from tap. Aroma smelled like an IPA should smell and appeared black with a tan head and hops present in the bottom of the glass. Taste was slight roastedness up front with a medium bitterness finish. Not quite as balanced as some BIPAs that I have had, but still good none the less.
Had this a second time. Much more balanced this go around. This is a great bIPA. Rescored this to show current rating. dcschiller (2208) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - MAR 30, 2013
On draught at Fate. Pours near black with a trim khaki head. Aroma has citrus pine resin and light cocoa. Taste is semi sweet malts and bitter. Medium bodied. I’m not a big black IPA fan, but this one is pretty good.
