3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler pours with a dark looking body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up loads of chocolate that’s all over the place with thin streams of dark roasted malts, molasses and sweet maltiness off in the background. The taste has a pleasing degree of chocolate bar mixed with a thin dark roasted maltiness sweetened up by some malts. To midway the chili pepper meat flavor comes to the surface and then the chili pepper heat starts to kick in toward the finish. The heat is firm but not overpowering. These chili peppers really let you know they’re there but a nice balance is achieved with chocolate, dark roasted malts and sweetness. Fun beer.
Chili beers are hard to get right -- either you get too much vegetal flavor, too little heat, too much heat or combative flavors -- a lot can go wrong. This one NAILS IT. Poured from draft, it’s ebony with milk chocolate tones and a thin tan head. Tangy lactose, mildly bitter dark chocolate and earthy hops swirl in the aroma along with hints of cinnamon and peppers. The flavor leads with milk and chocolate -- sweet, tangy lactose followed by smooth cocoa. The peppers are only noticeable as heat, and it’s the absolute perfect level -- not painful, but just enough to remind you it’s there and to prod you into taking another sip to wash it down. It doesn’t build; it doesn’t make you sweat; it doesn’t detract from the other flavors. Medium-light body; smooth, silky mild carbonation and a fair amount of peppery heat. Very well done. The beer isn’t too complex, but it may be the most drinkable chili beer I’ve tried. Increased amounts of flavor additives (cinnamon, etc) might push this one into very memorable territory. Chili pepper smell. Taste is much more chili than chocolate and you get some heat from the chilis. leelee247 (1) - - APR 11, 2014 does not count
So smooth with a nice little bite. A solid beer that’s super tasty, creamy with just the right amount of heat. I’ll have another please. JPDurden24 (1675) - Chandler, Arizona, USA - APR 2, 2014
Black pour with a small tan head. Aroma is aroma is chocolate with a small amount of vanilla and a taste is chocolate forward with a jalapeño pepper bite on the finish. Excellent. phaleslu (10546) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 29, 2014
Draft in a sampler at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown color with no head. Starts with notes of chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, and brown sugar, then finishes with a long jalapeno pepper kick at the end. It’s not aggressive or overwhelming, and kind of adds a fun dimension. Light-medium bodied, with low carbonation and a mouthfeel that starts sweet and finishes spicy. Pretty much exactly what I expected, a sweet stout that gives way to peppers.

Wow, fitting for the name. Solid chocolate stout. The heat from the chillis sneaks up on you, too! Very very good. BOLTZ7555 (3027) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAR 23, 2014
Bold, yet refined. Wouldn’t have guessed the ABV given the depth of flavor, although the aroma is more muted than I would have hoped for. Molasses pour with a small khaki head that held its own. Nose, as stated earlier, was subtle with Nestle Quik, toasted malt, and hints of roasted coffee. Flavor is more robust with brownie batter, fudge, and the perfect addition of chili. Not too hot and spicy. Doesn’t distract from the chocolaty base. A beautiful capsaicin heat that tickles the tongue but doesn’t ignite it. Nice creamy body that soothes the burn. Nicely done! daknole (11050) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - MAR 15, 2014
UPDATED: MAR 16, 2014 Dark brown with a tan head. It’s got the heat and the chocolate. It’s done just right. Bravo Adam. This batch has fresh jalapeños and you can tell the slight difference. JustDrinkIt (261) - Arizona, USA - MAR 14, 2014
Dark brown pour with little to no head. Aroma of light sweet chocolate, chili, and sweet cream. Flavor has a nice chili heat, chocolate, and vanilla bean notes. #ratedbeforedak
