COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Stout is a dry Irish style stout. The dark color of the beer comes from a mixture of roasted barley and chocolate malt (chocolate malt has a chocolate color, and doesn’t actually have chocolate in it.) The thicker texture is from an addition of flaked, unmalted barley. Flake barley is similar to rolled oats (oatmeal.) The stout is bitter, yet in balance with all the other heavy flavors in this beer. The nitrogen gas tapping system produces the thick, creamy head. Nitrogen bubbles are smaller and do not burst as easy.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown to black with a small, tan and creamy head. Hardroasted dark malt aroma. Sweet malt flavoured, light roasted and slight toffee. Smooth malty and subdued roasted finish.

Draft. A black beer with a red shine under a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, wort, and chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt lending it a slight acidity, combined with a note of chocolate, leading to a dry and roasted finish.

Papsoe (25063) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - SEP 5, 2009
On tap. Pours a dark brown with a vague tint of orange and a fine, creamy beige head. Medium body, a little low in carbonation. Some burned malty bitterness in the finish. 250709

On tap @ Faultline. Just about black in color with a tan head. Pretty much just bland and watery. Some roast, water, and ash. There’s a bit of acidity and sweet plum character. I don’t like the watery, flat, thin mouthfeel of the nitro pour here either, but it’s probably covering up some flaws so maybe it’s okay... The beer is just sort of semi-sweet black water.

marcus (10149) - Sacramento, California, USA - JUL 12, 2010
On tap at the brewpub (aka Black River Stout). Pours opaque black with a decent tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a dark malt flavor that is a bit too thin for a stout. However, a decent brew.

bytemesis (8249) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - JUL 2, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 6, 2013 Nitrogen tap. Pours deep black with a medium creamy brown head that laces well. Aroma is classical roasted malt, coffee, with notes of chocolate. Flavor is medium sweet roasted malt and chocolate. No real bitterness for me.

Sample at the brewpub on 8/10/10. Black pour with a thick tan nitro head. Roasty aroma with some chocolate and a bit of metal. Roasty and chocolatey flavor with a bitter dark chocolate finish.

Black with a creamy off white head. Chocolate caramel and citrus hops aroma. Taste of chocolate citrus slight chalkiness and a mildly tart and bitter finish.

stevoj (4966) - Boise, Idaho, USA - MAR 27, 2017
Draft at brewery. Inky black with small creamy head. Aroma is coffee and burnt toast. Taste also focuses squarely on the roast grains, pretty bitter. Nice feel.

Black with tan head. Burnt malt nose and flavor with espresso note. Rather thin.
