Dark brown pour with a thin head. Aroma is caramel and light wood. Lightly sweet; could use more bitter.

The flavor is light chocolate and roast upfront with a molasses/ brown sugar backbone. Some mild astringent coffee hints in the back end give it the needed balance. Texture was mildly sticky with sugary malt. Easily the best beer in the sampler.

Aroma is malt forward. Pours a dark brow with a rapidly disappearing tan head and moderate lacing. The taste is malt and bandaids, with a bitter finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, disappointing.

On tap at the brewpub 7/7/12 - Deep brown almost black in color with a small beige head. Aroma is of roasted malts, coffee, light chocolate. Tast is of toast, nuts, roasted malts, and coffee. After drinking the beer which was NOT a classic example of an Altbier, I decided to check out the taps to make sure the waitress was not confusing what was on tap. But alas the tap handle read "Alt" as clear as day. Seems the Brewer needs a lesson on Alts...or maybe they just shoved it into a style category not knowing where to put it? Aged 2 years (2011 vintage): It’s crazy how great this is at 2 years old... This black alt has a medium brown head and is nutty and very complex, much more so than fresh. It has a sweet, but not roasted character, making for an overall full-flavored and tasty, smooth, well-rounded and balanced alt that’s wickedly respectable. So nice!
