It poured a tan color with a small off-white head. The aroma was of caramel, some biscuit, citrus hops and alcohol. The taste was similar to the aroma. A very good Barleywine. seymour (2091) - Maplewood, Missouri, USA - OCT 14, 2012
Tasted on tap at the brewpub. It poured a mostly clear deep reddish amber color with some chill haze, nice white foam and lace. A true-to-style American barley wine. Complex, caramelly malt sweetness nicely balanced by strong hops bitterness, even stronger resiny hops aroma. Perfumey but otherwise well-concealed 11.5% alcohol. Well-crafted and easily one of Ferguson’s best recipes. Good stuff. Strykzone (7555) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - SEP 23, 2012
Draft at the brewpub. Effervescent hazy brown with a nice frothy layer of golden beige foam. Huge malts are in this beer and it smells it and tastes it. Plenty of grain notes, too. Bitterness is moderate and brings a nice little bite. Fruit is delicate for such a big beer but it does grow with warming. It is dark fruit with raisins prominent. This is very sweet and that almost goes into cloying territory. Alcohol is barely tasted and that is impressive for 11.5%. It dies bring instant warming, though. However, this a little harsh and that is due to the alcohol. This would be a fun beer to age to see where all of the sweetness goes.
