3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A curious creature this one.: faintly hazy rosy amber colour with a cream coloured head and evident sparkle. This is a good looking beer. The aroma is much more subtle than the Lurqs with resinous malts, rosewood, pecans, toffee and honeysuckle that you really have to put your nose into the glass to pick up (although this may be more to do with the serving temperature). Medium body, slightly sweet and then a good blast of bitterness develops reminiscent of redwood bark. Tasty stuff, long finishing and a nicely balanced beer.
Keg - Brew, Tauranga. Poured a clear, bright but deep amber with a fine, compact and slowly fading off-white head. Great hop presence with notable characters of pine, grapefruit, resin and passion fruit. Medium body with zingy carbonation and an enduring dry, resinous finish. Affirmative hops in both aroma and flavour bulked by a biscuity malt body profile supporting the aromatics and providing the palate weight. A balanced IPA in terms of structure with a finish that just lingers on and on but, above all, it’s clean, fresh and quaffable despite its fairly modest strength. Fantailz (4) - NEW ZEALAND - FEB 21, 2014 does not count
Bit of a fiasco as the lawn got the lion’s share. Nice hoppy little number. Clean and bright. crabbey (17) - NEW ZEALAND - FEB 11, 2014
Tasted at Pomeroys. Allowed to warm to an appropriate temperature.
Looks great. Bright amber.
Nose. Struggling for adjectives. I’m not sure which 3 nz hop varieties were used to get the almost meaty aroma. Like a butcher’s shop, just not as clean. Thankfully that is the low point.
Taste wise it is dominated by malt, not a bad thing given the nose. Clean.
Palate is malt sweet with a light bitterness that is characteristically new Zealand with the distinctive tang.
Overall I was disappointed. The aroma killed it, other parts were good.
