Draft. Poured a hazy reddish brown color with a moderate frothy tan head that lasted with good to excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex roasted malt, caramel, earthy hop and wood aroma. Medium to abundant body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout better version beer.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a cloudy brownish-orange color with a thin off-white head that evaporates quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, caramel and bourbon. Full-bodied and syrupy with a boozy character and flavors of caramel malt, fruit and hops. The finish is sweet with a bourbon and charred malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Draft at Fifty West via Blake. Pours a hazy caramel brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have big malt character, caramel, brown sugar, bourbon, vanilla, wood and some fruits. First class local brew. I’m very excited. phaleslu (10899) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - DEC 22, 2013
Draft in a sampler at the brewpub. Pours a cloudy orange color with a small off-white head. Sweet aroma and flavor: vanilla, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, golden raisins, dates, toast, a little oak, and some warming bourbon late. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, malty, coating mouthfeel and modest carbonation. The barrel really complements this beer well. Nice sipper. DrSilverworm (10000) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - DEC 19, 2013
UPDATED: SEP 21, 2014 On tap, thanks to Blake. Freshly tapped keg. Cloudy amber red orange color. thin khaki head, nice thicker lace. Awesome vanilla bourbon flavors, rich dark fruit. Smooth, creamy texture, bigger body, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate to bigger bitterness, light sweet, light alcohol warmth. Excellent stuff. Very tasty. 9/4/8/5/17
Update rate, 9/6/14: At Fifty Fest this year, they had a version of this beer that had been aged 10 months, versus the 4 months the original version spent in barrels. I got a half pour in a plastic cup. Dark red color. Thin khaki head. Leaves decent bits of lace. Up front in the nose, some very nice whiskey barrel aroma. Toasty caramel malt, some chocolate, nuttiness, big oak, butterscotch. Great full, thicker body. Good full creaminess to the texture. Sort of slick finish, moderate sweet taste, bigger bitterness, and a nice cresting warmth in the finish. Light heat on the end, but no bite. Great longer barley wine / barrel aftertaste to savor, makes me want to keep sipping repeatedly. I prefer the centennial hoppiness of fresh 10+2, but this is still an awesome complex barrel-aged barley wine. 8/4/8/4/17 [original scores kept]
