ineedbeer (2235) - Oakland, California, USA - DEC 29, 2016
Poured from a 22 oz bottle; black cap version. I thought I bought this in 2009, but maybe it was 2010.
Aroma is malt forward with lots of caramel and toffee; some lighter toasted bread, chocolate, nuts and honey. Fairly fruity with raisin, plum, prune, fig and cherry. Light phenolic notes with hints of alochol spice.
Pours a fairly clear brown color with some auburn hues and amber notes. Medium sized, medium thick, tan head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers in clumps. Light lacing and moderate length legs.
Flavor is odd with a moderate sweetness and dry finish. i guess there is a faint tartness, but I don’t really pick up on it. Very fruity with tons of raisin notes as well as some lighter fig, prune and cherry. Moderate malt notes, but lesser than the fruit with caramel, toasted bread, chocolate and toffee. Light honey and oxidation coming through. Medium bitterness and some light alcohol spice.
Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low, but present alcohol warmth.
Overall, better than I was expecting based on reports of infection, but its also an odd beer. This beer might taste more like chocolate covered raisins than any other beer I have tried, but it is like the sweetness was first sucked out. It lacks the mouthfeel and sweetness needed to carry the flavor profile. gyllenbock (9712) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - FEB 14, 2014
Bottle at Toronado, February 2014. (my first beer from this brewery)
Hazy dark amber with a small white head. Sweet with malt, toffee, dried fruit, light hops and some yeast. Almost a full body with some alcohol in the finish. A drinkable beer but also a slight disappointment.

Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar: Created a fizzy and sizzling layer of head which rapidly broke apart leaving a tiny of patch on foam that rested on top of a medium brown colored liquid. As for the aroma, my nose detects a rich base of caramelized malts that have strong resemblance in scent to toffee, but there isn’t a lot of Belgian yeast to be found. The flavor is subtle with a smooth balanced profile that has a combination of lightly toasted caramel like malt with only a slight hint towards a spicing of Belgian yeast. Overall though, this falls short of being a recipe to truly remember, but it was okay tasting and was worth the price. Guerde (1297) - Leuven, BELGIUM - MAR 27, 2013
(bomber from bhensonb thanks Bill!) Have the black cap here, and boy does the beer pour a cloudy murky brown color with a very thin off-white head. Gotta award a three as it doesn’t really look that appealing. I enjoy the aroma, but it is pretty odd, with plenty of raisin surging forth accompanied by a heavy dose of caramel that’s followed up with a surprising scent of stewed tomatoes. Starts to smell like my parents’ house during canning season. Some strawberry shows up alongside some bread which further adds to the complexity. The flavor, however, is not all that complex, with only some tart raisin-like flavors showing up before yielding to a semi-dry minerally finish. There’s a little bit of lingering caramel and dark fruit, but not strong enough to make any significant impression. The finish really falls apart in fact. Overall either age hasn’t treated this beer well, or it wasn’t all that good to begin with. nimbleprop (8725) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - MAR 19, 2013
22oz bottle pours a hazy, caramel amber. Nose of raisin and metal. Flavor of malt and rusty nails. Oxidized and gross.

Thinn brown lace. Clowdy brown color. Strange aroma of both violets and caramell. Sweet, sweet and more sweet! 5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - APR 2, 2012
Bottle:   Dirty caramel, darker, thin sudsy off-white head, sparce lacing.   Dark bready aroma, dark pitted fruit, lots of raisin on the nose.   Peppery start, raisin, dark pitted fruit, but not a lot of body.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Does hide its 11% very well.   Very minor mineral like flavor on the backside.   Not a lot of depth, but has a decent raisin and dark pitted fruit profile.   Lots of brown sugar as well, even a little burnt.   Decent, but a little simple. pours copper brown with a light fizz. Aroma is sweet and raisin like. Flavor is candied sugar or brown sugar? Has a raisin finish. dnstone (3498) - Kansas City, Missouri, USA - OCT 7, 2011
Sweet aroma. Browninsh color with an off-white head. Moderately sweet, a bit of off-flavors, think this might be turning. BillKismet (4111) - Seattle, Washington, USA - SEP 18, 2011
Dark, muddy, cider-brown, with burnt caramel cream-foam top. Belgian esters and phenols greet the nose - a muddy mix. Chocolate banana bread and a thread of alcohol burn. Again, a muddy yeast mix. Esters and phenols galore. Earthy yeasty. Some alcohol burn. But well melded. Definitely an evil experience.
