Baltic Porter aged in French Oak that did three turns of Cab Sauv from a well known California winery in Napa Valley. Barrels were somewhat neutral so French Oak Heavy Toast spirals added to barrels about 4 months and remained till barrels were emptied. Spirals soaked in Cab Sauv for 48 hours before being placed in barrels.

First in a series of wine barrel experiments for FiftyFifty.

22oz bottle thanks to MrChopin: Pours a mostly opaque dark mahogany with a thin, spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a lightly sweet dark caramel and milk chocolate nose with a touch of vinous complexity. Starts fairly thin for the style with only a faint sweetness and vinous tart fruitiness before a drier finish. Definitely needs more body.

A - Pours a dark brown-black with a hint of red with a touch of head and very little lace. S - Roasted chocolate malt with lots of red wine and a bit of oak and a touch of sourness. T - Roasted chocolate malts with a bit of sweetness red wine grapes. Through the middle, some oak comes through with a bit more chocolate and a touch of tartness and sourness. The finish is a mix of red wine, touch of vanilla, and chocolate. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a slightly dry and oakey finish. D - Very drinkable. More subdued than expected but the barrel flavors and the base beer balance nicely together.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2012 22 ounce bottle shared at the January 2012 Santa Cruz tasting at Sante Adairius. Pours a nice ruby brown color with a swirly cocoa head. Aroma is robust with zesty fresh coffee at the fore. A piney note comes through, just the slightest bit solventy. Big roasted flavor with tart coffee beans and a well-balanced red wine influence that contributes just enough fruitiness, sharpness and barrel character to make things interesting without taking over.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2012 Thank you wavers1 for this bomber! Pours dark brown with ruddy/ruby-ish heart and beige persistent halo of compact bubbles. Floury, tart and red fruit aromas, low note of cocoa. Layered flavors of tart blackberry jam, dusty flour, and plum jam, with tart red wine/red fruits mid-palate and a longer finish that builds into some drying bitterness. Lager-like quality in that its clean, and core is somewhat hollow, but the body is medium, slightly oily; some oxidative notes, no roast or overt hoppiness (all welcome).

Sampled from the tap at 2011 FOBAB. Poured black with a dark brown bubbly head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had a good amount of oak, with roasted malt, bitter chocolate and coffee. Flavor had notes of bitter dark chocolate, roasted malts and dark grains with a bit of a dry finish that had notes of oak.

Bottle at a tasting at James place. Pours a deep black with a thin beige head. Slight funk on the nose, deep roast, wine notes and barrel. Nice and spicy. Medium bodied, nice light funkiness, crisp and clean, spicy. Long roast with a touch of sweetness and wood notes. Very nice, quite interesting. Sort of a slightly sour Baltic porter. Love this.
