Pretty decent imperial stout that has most of the good things you’re looking for from barrel aging.

Had on draft at the brewery. Chocolate, coffee, fruity, floral, resiny, nice and easy drinking. I enjoy the barrel aged versions, Eclipse, but this is amazing on its own.

Bottle... Pours hazy and dark brown with a brief, creamy, khaki head. The aroma is a collage of toasted almonds, chocolate and leather. Medium to full-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The flavor is sort of bland, but roasty and moderately bitter. Finishes thin and minerally. This beats out Goose Island Night Stalker as being the weakest base beer for a "major-league" program involving barrel aged imperial stouts. Many say Night Stalker isn’t actually the base beer for the Bourbon County Stout varietals. I see Voodoo’s Big Black Voodoo Daddy falling into the same slot if the barrel aged versions actually turn out to be good.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Good lacing. Sweet caramel aromas. A very nice imperial stout. Smooth and tasty with bitter roasted malts that are kept in check by sweet caramel and vanilla notes. Well balanced.

Dark brown pour with some orange highlights. Orangy head. The aroma is very toasty with hints of black cherry and chocolate. Flavor is very smooth with dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel with a sweet, roasted finish. Very nice.

Bottle. Pours deep opaque black with a medium dark brown head that slowly dissipates leaving nice lacing. Aroma is very roasty, chocolate. Flavor is about the same, just a touch of anise, medium coffee bitterness on the finish, only a light sweetness. Medium-full body. Bitterness lingers and strengthens to the far finish. Warming on the finish as well. Pretty nice beer.

Tons of dark fruit dark chocolate very hoppy nose. Very heavy mouth feel with a touch sweet. Rounded. Big. Moderately hoppy finish. Issue is I don’t like such hoppy Impys.

bhensonb (15760) - Woodland, California, USA - MAR 6, 2013
Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours very dark brown/black with a cream dark tan head. Aroma of roasty malt with treacle and some herbal hop. Full bodied. Flavor is darkly roasty/burnt with treacle and non-fruity, non-resin hop. It is dry and almost astringent. Finishes with treacle notes and very bitter. Leaves a burnt earthy flavor in the mouth. Extremely tasty. So good of the brewer to release this base beer.

marcus (10681) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAR 3, 2013
Bottle from City Beer. Pours black with a modest tan head and a chocolate aroma. There is a heavy sweet treacle flavor with a dry finish. A nice start for the barrel-aged versions.
