3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
4oz sampler -
The waiter brought this as "just the regular stout". I thought it was funny that he chose those words...regular stout...as a description because it was nowhere near as tasty as the Eclips stout. Not bad, just kinda pedestrian. Aroma of toffee, alcohol, roasted malts and a touch of powdered chocolate. Flavor was strong with the alcohol, chocolate powder, roasted malts and a bit of coffee showing up. This is a kind of beer that can benefit from some age, but they serve it up fresh as a daisy.
Poured from a 22 oz bottle.
Aroma has some nice chocolate, toffee and caramel notes with some lighter honey and roast notes. Light anise notes with hints of raisin, prune and plum. Hints of alcohol.
Pours black with a medium sized, moderately thick, that recedes somewhat quickly to the edges where it lingers for a bit. No lacing and small legs.
Flavor is moderately sweet with some chocolate notes and some lighter toffee and caramel. Hints of roast, honey and ash. Medium bitterness and light alcohol spice. Some dark fruit notes of raisin, prune, plum, date and some light anise notes.
Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. Low, but present astringency and low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a decent beer but not amazing. Placing this in barrels definitely improves it by adding some complexity and mellowing out the anise notes. 47574xeCD (1350) - Coventry, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - AUG 28, 2017

Beer No. 5 of my flight of beers at the brewery tap. Pitch black colour, tan head. Heavily roasty aroma and flavour, notes of strong coffee and dark bitter chocolate. Pretty good stuff. Zymurgeist2 (2440) - Redwood City, California, USA - AUG 8, 2015
On tap at the brewhouse as part of a flight of everything they offered! Brown with moderate tan head. Slight roast and moderate low coffee. Faint chocolate. Taste includes a dusty chocolate powder character.

Bottled. More or less pitch black colour with a mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is chocolate malts, mild toasted notes as well as some liquorice and alcohol. Flavour is rather similar in a good balance. Thick and tasty impeiral stout. hopdog (13267) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 2, 2014

Deep black pour with aroma of dark fruit, coffee, molasses, and alcohol. Great flavor with dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, and coffee. Velvety mouth feel. Nice beer! slowrunner77 (13225) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 2, 2014
looks textbook. feels textbook. but there’s something different about this one. less roasted malt and coffee flavors. more molasses? chicory? chocolate and dark fruit. makes for a unique tasty brew, but i do like Eclipse better. Big and thick, though the abv is well covered. worth a try."
