From a waxed-up bomber, this poured a slightly hazed amber body with merely a ring of a fizzy head. The aroma was sharp and zesty, also having grapefruit, orange pips, juicy fruity malt, and a hit of runny caramel. The flavor was bitter, mainly with the zest, and the light malty sweetness definitely receded into the background. It finished on a solidly bitter note. Should Finch ever brew this again, I feel they really need to beef up the malt. Against the grain here for sure. Nice surprise here. Deep copper pour with a wispy white head. Aroma was clean and full of caramel and toffee like malts. Nice candied, piney hop presence. Flavors were clean and balanced, lots of toffee and caramel, nice bitter hoppy finish. Chewy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Lingering bittersweet finish. Maybe some bad bottles got around or time has done this wonders. Nice clear ruby and deep brown coloured body with a copper glow and a one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pit fruits, deep english hops, bitterness, peat, oak and tons of whiskey and liqour notes. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong pungent oak and whiskey flavour with a hint of gin and juniper berries, some light earth and a bunch of english hops. Aftertaste shows a lot of hops still, a bunch of pit fruit sweetness and somehow even more bitterness and earthiness from the malt. Overall, not a bad barley wine at all - showing some oaky and liquor based flavours and a deep earthy malt and earthy hop bite - nice. I don’t see how this is rated so low - while it isn’t a typical American Barley Wine, it really wasn’t bad at all and was fairly good. 22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours hazy red copper color with a 1 finger dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, raisin, brown sugar, floral, grass, toast, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity of malt and hop notes. Taste of caramel, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, floral, grass, brown sugar, toast, and floral earthiness. Moderate amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, citrus zest, pine, floral, grass, toast, brown sugar, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of malt and hop notes; with a nice sweetness/bitterness balance and minimal cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice American barleywine style. All around nice balance and complexity of malt and hop flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy caramel, toffee, and fruit. It pours a slightly hazy amber with a small off-white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with moderate-heavy caramel with light toffee. The finish has muted citrus hops and oxidation. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.
Muddy apple cider color, with scant, whispy, off-white head / Nose of sour malt and cooked fruit / Full body, bitter with some sweetness, sour, low fruit, dull / Flavors, or absence thereof, of caramel and cooked fruit / I have had good experiences with Finch’s, but I don’t know how this was released. Plastic topped bomber bottle (okay if that is wax, it is cheap crap) and served in Duvel snifter: Deep coppery hue with a rock frothy slightly off-white head and nice lace. The aroma has notes of resiny, oniony, catty, piney and slightly citric hops. Moderate caramel and biscuity malts, some dill and allspice esters along with touch of butterscotch British yeast ester. The taste is quite resiny, herbal, bile and highly alpha acidic. There is some sweet malt bouncing about but is strictly a annoyance. This may as well been a cleaner DIPA for it taste profile fails as a Barley wine. The mouth feel is aggressive and biting with a metallic and aspirin finish. 22 oz. bottle: Pours a cloudy burnt orange with a medium off- white head that is mostly lasting. Aroma has a hoppy nose with hints of pine, orange peel, caramel, and a alcohol presence. Flavor starts sweet with hints of a boozy rye, toffee & dark fruits. Mouthfeel has a creamy texture with a peppery presence that finishes with a piney bitterness. The hop presence is more than I like in a Barley Wine.
