Dark brown colour, minimal head, hint of chocolate. Smokey aroma and a mild smokey tastes as well. deyholla (11721) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 24, 2012
Sampled from the tap at FOBAB 2012. Pours black with a dark brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a nice roasted malt note with a hint of sweet dark grains, coffee and a wood backing. Flavor has more roasted malts with a hint of sweetness and oak in the finish. tmoreau (4424) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - AUG 19, 2012
A special 5 gal. reserve that was on tap later in the afternoon at the Oak Park IL. Micro Brew & Food Review. Dispensed to a fest glass with a viscous, black/brown hue that clung as light syrup to the sides of the glass, along with a thick, brown, lasting, moussy head, and wavy cling to the lacing. The aroma was rich & roasty malt, chocolate, touches of caramel & vanilla, with the coffee notes following up. There was just enough sweetness, while light whiskey and cask characteristics mellowed the flavor. No more than a medium+ body, with a nice creaminess to the mouthfeel, and a soft dryness to the finish. Not necessarily a full blown dessert brew, but a very tasty Stout nonethless. Draft pour on tap at Oak Park Microbrew Review 2012 (Oak Park, IL). Pours a rich deep opaque pour, big cakey brownish fluffy head stays huge and laces well. Cakes big. Aromas are rich cocoa, mellow vanilla bean. Firm roast, toast, cocoa, and coffee beans. Some caramel, creamy silky sweetness with a bit of dryness, the vanilla element and a touch of oak, gentle spirit. Initial is thicker end of medium bodied, rich cocoa and toffee, roasty malts, coffee, and toffee. Gentle barrel, dryness, and roast. Coffee elements comes on, still an enjoyable frothy silky body. Silky cream, vanilla, oak. Gentle kiss of spirit. Heat, some richer fudge and toffee, vanilla, lingering roast oak and coffee. Really good, full yet fluffy, great flavors. Really nice beer offering with some rich flavors, good balance, yet mellow barrel kisses. Really nice beer. Not the most potent nose, but quite a lovely actual flavor and balance experience. Push that nose a bit more with some fresher coffee infusion or fresh bean aging, and this beer would be push it even farther. Overall, it stays fairly true to it’s smooth, silky base. Barrel doesn’t push the limits on this guy, seems pulled off at a perfect time. Well done, guys. drowland (8827) - Georgia, USA - AUG 17, 2012
8/11/12. GTMW. Black pour with a small tan head. The aroma is definite roast and chocolate with definite coffee, but it does come across as green pepper quite a bit. Smooth roasted malts with plenty of chocolate and whiskey in the flavor - a bit too sweet for my taste. Not bad.
