3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap in the illadelph. This was a solid porter, but I was not impressed by it. It had some bitterness, but I wanted more bitterness. It had some roast, a hint of coffee-like aromas, but I wanted more of this. It was too sweet, I wanted it to be drier. I wanted it to be hoppier. It was not bad, but it did not satisfy. It felt short of my ideal, my measuring stick, which is the Edmund Fitgerald. Yes, it was a solid porter, a good beer. But it was not good enough that I would order it again unless I really did not have better alternatives.
Not too good of porter but a good attempt dark robust with a bam bam finish yeah not bad bytemesis (8823) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - DEC 5, 2012
Tap. Pours clear ruby black with a medium tan head that leaves excellent lacing. Aroma is coffee, tobacco, and dark roasted malt, exactly as it should be. Flavor is about the same, lightly sweet with a light coffee bitterness. Full bodied and creamy in the mouth. This is a nice porter; I don’t understand the low ratings it is getting unless it has improved over the past couple of years. ngeunit1 (1555) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - APR 19, 2012
A - Served a fairly dark mahogany that is just clear around the edges with a finger of frothy tannish head atop. Head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of roasted and slightly burnt caramel malts with some coffee as well.
T - Starts off with some roasted caramel malts with a touch of coffee and a bit of sweetness. Through the middle some deeper slightly burnt malts come through with just a touch of earthy hops. Finish is a mix of deep roasted malts with a touch of coffee that lingers.
M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a nice sweet toasty finish.
D - Very drinkable with a nice balance of roasted malts and other flavors. Everything works really nicely here. SamGamgee (2452) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - MAY 30, 2010
Draught at the brewery. Dark brown with a creamy beige head. Toasty malt aroma with some chocolate. Sweet and vaguely chocolatey. Very mild hops. Lingering sticky sweetness persists through the finish. Lots of caramel that hops and roasted malt struggle to balance. Just like the maibock, this could be much drier, but it’s a worse offence in this case whereas it was more excusable there.

This porter has won awards and know why it is so good and so balanced I almost switched to porter as my favorite beer. Not. Sorry I’m a hop head for life. but this beer almost had me. Perfect sums it up. Rock on. hwasone (3) - , California, USA - JAN 21, 2009 does not count
On tap in Sunnyvale. Aroma of chocolate and grain. Almost black in color. Flavor was somewhat underwhelming. As they say, some coffee and chocolate. Nice medium to full body that really coats your mouth, but I found the finish uncomfortably astringent. Overall, not great. Stick to their Red and Scotch. brianprentiss (704) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 7, 2006
Run of the mill micro porter. The brewery is great, a fun place to catch a game but the beer is not great. This porter is an avg beer, try the IPA.
