4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sampled on 9/2/2012 during an FW 11-15 vertical. This American Strong Ale pours a dark brown color from a 22oz bottle. Small to no head. The aroma is caramel, fruity, sweet and woody. A full bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are fruity, sweet, boozy and woody. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Slight touch of oxidation, but mostly wood and bourbon. Very smooth. Nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. An interesting tasting. The group consensus was that the was not a whole lot of difference between the 11, 12 and 14, but that the 13 was thin and tasted so different from the others we wondered if they changed the recipe.
18/XI/16 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ Seb’s Farewell Tasting (Eugene’s place) - BB: n/A, bottled: XI/1/07 (2016-1316) Thanks to Benzai for sharing the bottle!77ships (11051) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - NOV 19, 2016
Clear dark purple to brown beer, aery irregular beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very oxidized, caramel, lots of vanilla, some milk chocolate, sweet. MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: soft acidity, lots of alcohol, sweet malts, caramel, sugary, chocolate, lots of vanilla, lovely stuff. Aftertaste: soft bitterness, alcohol, chocolate, soft roast, lots and lots of vanilla. What a beer!
Thank you Benazi. Bomber @ Sebletitje’s Farewell Tasting. Black with barely any bubbles. Oxidation is huge in the nose, leaves, plastic, huge oxidation, nail polish with harsh booze, plastic, barrel, there is some bourbon but it is far too oxidized. Taste has touch less oxidation but it is still huge, massively oxidized, plastic, cellar, low bourbon, plastic, oxidized plastic malts, booze is extreme, varnish & nail polish qualities, sugar, oxidized malts sugar. Plastic & harsh nail polish body. This was clearly an awesome beer at some point but oxidation is far too big for me at this point. Bottle says 01 Nov. 2007. This is 9 years old by this point. Bottle [from trade with Madmitch76] shared @ Sebletitje’s Farewell tasting. Red-brown color, small to average sized off-white head. Aroma ’is’ a bit old (no surprise given it was brewed 9 or 10 years ago), but still quite nice. Taste malts, caramel, bourbon and brandy still there. Still nice, but clearly past its prime. Bottle shared @ Sebletitje’s Farewell tasting, shared by Benzai thanks! Light sour, malts, bourbon, vanilla, still pretty darn good. BiiruBierBeer (1059) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - JAN 3, 2015
Faint smell of malt. Taste is malty with a heavy alcohol presence. Wasn’t a fan of this one.

Bottle from SJ. This was so damn complex, but so good. Amazing notes of vanilla, dark malts, dark fruits, some dark and rich chocolates, and to make it better, OAK!

The one I was missing; huge thanks to Grant! Tepid brown pour. Lovely oxidized character of sherry and oaken dryness mix with captivating honeycomb, molasses, and creme caramel aspects. Nougat and almond abound as well. Definitely showing its age and a bit past its prime, but still absolutely lovely, and were I by a fireplace in January in New England there wouldn’t be much better. alexsdad06 (10817) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - MAY 27, 2014
22 oz bottle shared by ??? at RBWG 2011 alongside other versions, Pours a dark brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor had sweet malts, bourbon, caramel, vanilla, dark fruits, wood, molasses, some alcohol heat, I thought this was tasty, but would like another shot at it because of the palate fatigue. Traded bottle. Actually carried this to WV for birthday celebration but ended up drinking it at home. This reminds me of a caramely barley wine with some vanilla but it is starting to thin. If you have this, drink it now. Frydaddy (24) - Vail, Arizona, USA - OCT 20, 2013
I figured this had aged long enough! I’m not sure what should have showed up or not...but here goes. The blends I thought were perfect. Some below made the comment of Marshmallow flavor. I’d have to agree. It was silky smooth and almost zero alcohol taste or mouthfeel. Zero oxidation and was bottle perfectly. I can see why this beer has received such a high marking!
If you happen to have a bottle, I’d drink it now as the beer might start to change in the other direction.
