On tap & Burgundian for Brettfest. Pours thick dark brown with thin lacy mocha head. Aroma is super dark roasty malt that is quickly overwhelmed by tart cherries and dark fruit. Taste is roasty dark chocolate malt with bourbon, vanilla, and port (Parabola), which is matched on the finish by big tart oaky dry finish. Awesome beer to try. Not sure Parabola can be improved upon, but taking it a different direction is really cool. Black beer with a brown lacing. Aroma is definitely a blend, I smell the strong ale and the sour beer. It actually smells like a sour port wine, which may be the point. Roasted, cocoa, and unfortunately a bit too much acetic sour vinegar. Has a thinned out aroma. Flavor is green apple sour stronger then comes the roasted strong ale. Its like a charred green apple with a long tart finish. I’m glad its only 6oz.

Draft at bigwood. From notes. Dark, thick brown pour. Small ring of brown bubbles, nice lacing. Aroma: similar to Jupiter’s Blood (see review if interested), actually. Maybe a hint of chocolate to boot? These could be the same beer based on the nose. Some alcohol as well. Taste: really complex and interesting. Chocolate, roast, vinegar, some sweetness, oak. Not sure the flavors all come together. Dry, almost chalky finish. Alcohol. Palate: full body, slick texture. Overall: decent. Not mind blowing or anything - curious about what this is.

Stronger, fuller body for a sour

On tap at Brouwer’s Cafe for Big Wood 2013, pours a deep dark mahogany / dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is quite sour, with some Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, tart dark fruits and oak - this smells like a vinegar bomb. Flavour is not really in line with the nose, as there isn’t much of a vinegary quality. Instead, there are notes of lightly tart dark fruits, oak, and some subtle vinous (red wine) notes. The booze definitely is apparent in the warmth, but not with much of a burn. Great stuff.
