COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An Imperial Blonde Ale or Blonde Barley Wine; Helldorado has the lightest color of any of the beers in our barrel program but carries a great deal of interesting barrel character: vanilla, light char and amazing lavender-honey notes. Rich boozy honey liqueur character and loads of smooth sweet toasted malt to finish. The El Dorado hops dance in the background without playing a dominant role in the flavor profile. This beer gets better and better the longer it is in barrel.

On tap at XVI Celebration, multiple samples.

Appearance: Pours a bright amber gold. White film and edges.

Aroma: Citrusy hop, honey, fruit punch.

Taste: Toasty malt, euro hops, banana esters, vanilla.

Mouthfeel: Astringent, medium bodied, low carb.

Oveerall: A really odd barley wine. Didnt get much barrel either. Doesnt make it south often, so glad I could try it.

Bottle thanks to after4ever. Its starting to get cold, and this is just what the doctor ordered. Clear honey-amber in color, no head or lacing. Starting off when its much too cold, the aroma brings: alcohol, vanilla, caramel, a nice spicy, somewhat floral quality; apple liqueur; honeyed and sweet without being sticky or even remotely cloying. Nice, pleasant and playful hop presence -- still big and malt/barrel driven, wouldnt say theres much bitterness to it, but definite hop presence. Full body, smooth texture, lasting alcohol warmth in my belly. Overall: lovely as expected from the FW barrel series.

Bottle. This is like liquid honey. Lighter than a barley wine and bigger than a belgian strong ale. This is a really well done barrell finished brew.

Golden color with off-white head. Aroma has sweet bourbon and some floral honey. Taste has lots of bourbon and wood tannins, sweet, clean malt in the background, aftertaste even has some hop bitterness. Sticky body with soft carbonation. Overall its a really elegant, bourbon forward string ale.

Good goddamn. I was curious (and admittedly a bit uncertain) about this light-colored Barleywine. (What the hell, Ill dub it a Blondeywine.) Helldorado presents both intensely boozy malt and West Coast style hops with its nose. So what does a Blondeywine taste like? As I found, its a beast of its own. Huge butterscotch, honey, whiskey, and vanilla notes with a followup of woodsy, floral hops. While the booze and complexity make this a great candidate for aging, its hard to imagine me enjoying this more than I did when it was fresh. The balance between booze/bitter/sweet was remarkable. Gorgeous stuff.

2016 vintage. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was not of this world, but just like Firestone Walker says on their bottle, yes, this is a blonde barleywine. A fingers worth of white foamy head dissipates fairly quick. Lace is barely there. The aroma starts off with a thick sweet honey, vanilla, toffee, caramel, cashews, roasty chestnuts, slight floral hops (theres the bitterness). The flavor is what leans honey sweet embracing a refined dry toffee/caramel backbone hitting its aftertaste full and appropriate with a clean mature slightly oaky dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium bodied. Sipping quality yields a soft carbonation that feels really nice and low. Overall, hmmmm....my final thoughts on this one, well, American or English, well, that leaves a bit up to moderation since its color is no where close nor do any tobacco-esque hops come out to play. What we have here is not a failure to communicate to everyone who rates to style but to show the creative blessings of Firestone Walker yet still showing some of the Barleywine features in this beer.
