they had two single barrel ediitons of Rufus poured at Firestone Walker Barrelworks. I’ve never had the base beer. There are hints of a strong amber underneath, but the barrel (in both) steal the show. 94 lower in abv showed a touch less heat than 95, but neither was distracting. Both smooth, 94 was a little more woody, 95 perhaps a touch more silk and vanilla. They didn’t specify any brand for each barrel so it was blind. Both great...94 ever so slightly preffered. arminjewell (9728) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - FEB 8, 2015

Pour on tap at the brewery, hazy reddish brown pour with white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, big oak, dark fruit into a bit of red fruits, bourbon comes through into a hint of slight grassy note. Taste is a mix of cocoa, roast, caramel, some slight oak, vanilla and bourbon, touch of coconut into a bit of spice, finishing fairly sweet. Decent. Barrel #94, had on draft at the brewery. Raisin, molasses, burnt sugar, chocolaty, woody, alcohol that works well with this beer, amazing. thome50 (1295) - Morro Bay via Orange County, California, USA - APR 14, 2013
Tap. "Barrel#94 Rufus-Continental Imperial Amber Ale. (4.14.2013) Pours a hazy to deep golden to almost brown. Head is medium. Aroma is vanilla, whiskey, barrel and some caramel. Taste is oak barrel tanin forward with some vanilla, toffee and raisin. This has lots of "old IPA" taste to it but the barrel and such seems to work to some degree here. It isn’t as off putting as I’d normally say with an old hoppy beer. Marheb (6334) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 13, 2013
(Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): Une des reines de la journée, vieillie 5 ans en barrique, absolument monumental comme complexité, présence en bouche. L’acidité du viellissement et les nombreux sucres se marrient parfaitement au bourbon, une succulente democratie...Rencontre trop brève.

Pouring at the Saturday sessions of Extreme Beerfest. Pours a hazed brown with ruby highlights and a thin beige head. Big boozy bourbon on the nose. Sweet plums and malt, warm bourbon, sweet bourbon and warm vanilla. Lingering alcohol, vanilla. Warm cocoa and bourbon. johnnnniee (4457) - Bedford, New Hampshire, USA - MAR 22, 2013
On tap at EBF 3/16/13.
This beer was my nightcap for the fest, well twice that is. My notes are pretty blurry at this point, but I did write that this was a nice fruity sour ale. I’d love to try this beer again as I do remember getting sent off smiling. daknole (11048) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - FEB 24, 2013
Cloudy dark brown pour, very small tan head. Aroma of everyting delicious I could imagine in beer! Figs, dates, raisins, bourbon, toffee, caramel, churros...damn the flavor is even better. Reminds me of a carbonated and more drinkable utopias. So much wonderful oak, bourbon, dark fruit, toffee. Holy shit this is awesome. holdenn (2127) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 3, 2013
Sampled at FOBAB ’12. Rich caramel malt nose, lots of vanilla and bourbon all over.. Strong bourbon flavors. Dry clean bourbon, pretty sweet. Decent.

Draft at Fobab 10. Pours a deep amber, near brown. Reasonably clear. Nose is loads of vanilla and bourbon. Some faint hops pop through, along with caramel. Sweet in the nose. On tasting, it is moderately sweet but a bit overdone with the bourbon. I can see this being a blender for their beers, but not a standalone. Firm backing bitterness to go with the strong vanilla and oak. Interesting to try it split out.
