Poured 22 oz into a sniffer glass. The Abacus has a burnt caramel color. Oak favors with a hint of coconut, which goes well with this big boozy beer.
Dark amber color with a tight off white head of foam. Rich caramel, brown sugar, dried stone fruit, oak barrel, and a bit of roasted malt. Very mellow with backbone like a good bourbon. Firestone-Walker + Barrel-Aged = Greatness. sjohnny (705) - - MAR 16, 2018

2018 bottle, into a tulip glass. Pours thin watery reddish brown with very thin head. Aroma is sweet boozy toasted caramel malt; figs, golden raisins, and oak flavors stand out. Surprisingly light profile for the size of this beer. Taste is similar - a bit more depth here with leather, bourbon, molasses, and charred barrels. Light vanilla sweetness. Super easy drinking for the abv. Excellent, as expected. ffaoe (1088) - Moorestown, New Jersey, USA - FEB 26, 2018

Well it is a positive surprise. It is not a hop driven BW it is super hard caramel/toffee bourbon brew. My only wish if it was thicker. Erzengel (10027) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - JAN 14, 2018
Shared at tasting @ Koelschtrinker's place. Great malty smooth beginning. Very soft, smooth. Malt, honey, wood. Extreme dense, deep. Caramel, molasses, wood, honey. Fantastic balanced. Not too much wood, the beer is in the foreground, fantastic deep and dense. Long malty deep fantastic dark woody thick rich and not too sweetish aftertaste. More than fantastic! UPDATED: JAN 14, 2018 Sampled from 0.65 l bottle as 'Abacus', bottled in 2011. Clear, dark reddish brown with a beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity and a little oxidized aroma of molasses, raisins, prunes and some vanilla. Very sweet, malty, slightly fruity and a little oxidized taste of molasses, raisins, prunes and vanilla, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, quite warming and pretty boozy finish. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite nice, but even after such a long time still too hot. A bit disappointing, not overly complex, just very intense, moaning on a high level though. Koelschtrinker (22732) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - JAN 13, 2018
Stark alkoholischer, holzig-würziger Antrunk. Dunkel alkoholisch-würzig, eher monoton, kräutrig, trockener Hintergrund. Mittellanger Nachhall. Ok, nichts Besonders. 8/9/8/9/13/9 applejax (1) - USA - JAN 4, 2018 does not count
Leaving it in its box, I put it in the garage for a bit under an hour to cool it off. I wanted it cool not cold, but hey, It's 19 degrees over here.
I pulled it from the insulating temperature-regulating box and cool it was. Popped the cap, poured into a snifter, and took a nice big whiff.
Smell is strong brown sugar and some following dark fruit as they are frequently found together. I got no problem with that. In fact, I rather like it. A touch of trailing alcohol if you pay attention.
Taste is moderate sweet, caramel up front, brown sugar, maybe some chocolate; with a small hit of alcohol bitter on the end, mixing with some of that brown sugar lingers. There's an earthy-woodiness going on, most noticeable just before the alcohol on the end. It's not boozy, but it's there and it balances the upfront sweetness.
Full mouthfeel, but not thick or syrupy.
Appearance: looks fine. Whatever. 7
Smell: love that brown sugar: 8
Taste: complex and well blended: 8.5
Mouthfeel: medium-heavy without being tiresome: 7.5
Overall: Excellent, sip and enjoy: 8
It's almost like a touch of quad on top of a super smooth barleywine. More barleywine characteristics come out at the end. Don't rush this one, sip and enjoy.
