COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

Bottled 650ml (vPBF, alc. 12.5%, vintage 2012)
Deep ruby color, small beige head. Strong vanilla aroma with raisiny fruity notes. Full-bodied. Vanilla, alcohol, rye bread, raising. Too much alcohol right now, otherwise quite good.

On tap at Firestone Walker Barrelworks. A lightly hazy dark brown beer with a dense beige head. The aroma is just beautiful, with dried fruits, mostly raisins and figs, a spiced hint and some alcohol and vanilla. There’s a bit too much alcohol on the palate, it’s very warming, but still wonderful. Full body and pleasant carbonation. Dried dark fruits, some dried apricot and a little bitterness too deal with the sweetness. Plain lovely. 130809

650ml bottle - thanks tiong, VastActive and the crowd from Hel!
Beautiful rich aroam, heady malts, some coconut. Normally that coconut would be a very bad sign, but this manages to get away with it somehow, and the richness of the roasted malts and woodiness are make up for almost everything. Very sweet sticky palate. Nice malty but a bit yeasty. Coconut less obvous in the taste. Smoothish, and a nice sipper. Did like coming back to this glass in between subsequent beers, as the aroma was a reset that would put a smile on my face. If I was being harsh, I’d flaw it for being a bit too sweet and strong, but I’m overlooking that.

A: The pour is a dark, rich amber color with a small off-white (perhaps beige) head. S: The nose has an incredibly rich fruitiness to it which I really was not expecting. Plenty of sugar, caramel, bourbon, vanilla and oak in the nose as well. T: The nose gave this one a lot to live up to, and I’m happy to say the flavors delivered! A lot of caramel and toffee sweetness, obviously, but also some really great barrel character as well. The bourbon, vanilla, oak, and even some hop bitterness really round this beer out. M: The body is very full with a low level of carbonation that works well here. D: Normally you don’t associate barleywines with easy drinking, but this one is so smooth and delicious that it’s easy to keep going back for more. I can’t wait until this is bottled.

Tap at Samuel Horne. Pours very black with a slight creamy head. Aroma is mostly malty with light darkish fruit hints. Full bodied. It is sweet with lots of dark fruit - more cherry than date. Bourbon and fruit. Could be some floral hop. Oak seems blended in. It finishes sweet but not sticky. Liquid food. Fruit juice du jour. Lovin it.
