COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Note: Sucaba is the beer formerly known as Abacus until the Winter 2012 release.

Bottle thanks to Bleeg, shared at the May tasting. Pours a dark ruby with a small off white head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is vanilla, oak, and smoke. Thick mouthfeel with a vanilla malt flavor with the alcohol present but not overpowering. Enjoyed this barley wine from Firestone.

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2012 2012 bottle, thanks to Bruce at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours deep brown, with a small beige head. The nose is bourbon, vanilla, light coconut, wood, earth and creamy milk chocolate. The taste is raisin, currant, cherry, toast, big oak aspect, charred wood, coffee, bourbon, alcohol warmth, toffee, milk chocolate, cream and brown sugar, with a bitter-sweet finish. Full body, fine carbonation and slightly oily mouth-feel. A well made and flavoursome barrel-aged barley wine.

Tap at Samuel Horne. Pours very black with a slight creamy head. Aroma is mostly malty with light darkish fruit hints. Full bodied. It is sweet with lots of dark fruit - more cherry than date. Bourbon and fruit. Could be some floral hop. Oak seems blended in. It finishes sweet but not sticky. Liquid food. Fruit juice du jour. Lovin it.

On tap at Boulder Strong Ale Fest poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of oak, plum, vanilla, toffee, light bourbon and light spice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of bourbon, oak, vanilla, plum, toffee and light carmel with a smooth warming lingering bittersweet finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks Ariel. Clear deep reddish amber with a beige head. Aroma of malt, bourbon, lots of vanilla, cookies, caramel and a bit of chocolate hints. Sweet malty flavor with caramel, vanilla, some cookies, wood and a bit of nuts. Medium to full-bodied. Would be a bit happier if it had an even fuller and heavier mouthfeel, but still very good.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear reddish brown color with a minimal frothy off-white head that mostly diminished with little lacing. Moderate to heavy chocolate, wood, coconut and small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy complex chocolate sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is another standout beer.
