Chuck Silva is a pioneer of the West Coast style IPA and a legend in the San Diego craft beer scene. He recently resettled on California’s Central Coast to begin his next chapter in craft beer -- opening Silva Brewing in Paso Robles. No stranger to hops himself, Firestone Walker Brewmaster Matt Brynilson wanted to welcome Chuck back to our beautiful region. What better way to be neighborly than work on a beer collaboration. Naturally, Barrelworks did not want to miss out, offering a French oak horizontal foeder from Saxum winery, our resident wild critters, and 6 months of barrel aging time to this adventure. Introducing Ten Buck Chuck! This wild ale demonstrates a new spin to Barrelworks beers: transforming a hop forward beer through secondary fermentation and oak aging. The result is an amazing twist on an IPA. Hop-derived aromas of mango, dried apricot and pineapple blend seamlessly with the tropical character of our wild microflora. A glimpse into the world of hop aroma biotransformation. Soft oak and funky fruit forward flavors give way to a firm yet clean hop bitterness and gentle acidity that is uniquely quenching. A sante!

interesting beer, to me it tastes a lot like passion fruit, medium to low sourness and indeed a bit hoppy although not too bitter at the end, interesting

375 ml corked and caged bottle courtesy of IrishBoy (thanks Richard!) poured a clear gold with a lasting creamy white head. Aromas of straw, horse blanket, tropical fruit, citrus, oak and light yeast. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry tart finish. Flavors of straw, tropical fruit, pink grapefruit, yeast, light funk and light oak with a crisp dry tart lingering bitter funky finish.

(En fût à Firestone Walker - Propagator): Une odeur de chips au vinaigre, carambole et cuirette me titille dès les premiers instants. En bouche, l’acidité du noyau de pêche enrobe sa chair, à l’inverse de la réalité (whoa!!). Solide.

Poured from a 375 into a teku chalice. Bought two bottles yesterday at the 20th Anniversary Release. My understanding from one of the brewer’s at FW is that this is a batch of Luponic Distortion 002 aged with brett in a large French Oak Foeder down at Barrelworks to welcome Chuck Silva, formerly of Green Flash, back to the area. Poured a cloudy golden with a medium white head. Funky, over-ripe fruit nose, on the musty side. Taste is bitter, sour, kinda of a more- sour Orval. Nice crisp aftertaste with a lingering sourness. One of the best beers of the day for me.

My phone entered this before I could do the name, Firestone Walker Ten Buck Chuck. Draft at the Firestone XX Release where they sold bottles. Nose is lightly funky and tart with notes of mango, musty wood, and papaya.. Hazy yellow with a big, heavy lacing white head. Flavor is funky AND bitter !!!
