Deep black pour with hearty carbonation. Velvety indeed. Very smooth, creamy, somewhat rich. The bourbon is not all that noticeable. This is a pleasantly rich yet drinkable stout, but I would have enjoyed a bit more warming alcohol or barrel flavor to offset the sweetness.

On tap at Blue Palms Brewhouse (Los Angeles, CA): Pours opaque black/deep brown and topped with a beige head with lots of rich lacing. Bittersweet chocolate and coffee ground aromatic backbone, with hint of bourbon, oats, wood, toasted almonds, hops, roasted malts, and some spice. Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation. Flavors of mild chocolate and roast coffee flavor. Metallic towards and throughout the finish. Drinkability: Taste is fair compared to a powerful aroma. Pairing: Aged cheese. Rebuy: Yeah, ok. #343 on 14032010, DG.

12 oz bottle: pours almost black with a tan head. Oily, slick, CO2 sticks to the glass. Aroma of chocolate and toasted malts, some grass. Sweet and bitter taste, very complex. Smooth, thick and chewy finished bitter and sweet. Very easy to drink complex flavors make this a distinct brew.

12 oz bottle, that was a gift from Daknole (thanks Dak!), served in a tulip. Pour is a deep black/ruby with a quarter inch of tan, loose bubbly head; not much lacing, nor retention with this brew. Nose is a hearty bowl of oatmeal with molasses on it, roasted malt, chewy toffee, a touch of vanilla, and notes of dark chocolate. This smelled like a wonderful breakfast! Taste very closely mimics the nose, so closely in fact that I had to resist the urge to go get a spoon. This was a very delicious oatmeal stout, one of the better ones Ive had, and one I could easily drink time and again. Though the diverse nose shines through clearly to the pallet, it was surprisingly done in a way that didnt come off as hops, nor was it particularly sweet. This was an incredibly balanced stout!

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours black, with a very small tan head that quickly fades. Nose is cocoa and coffee, and the taste follows the nose. Very smooth, well balanced stout, with a creamy mouth feel and a nice short finish. Delicious.

Bottle. Exceptional "shelf" stout, I dont think there are many better 6-packs out there. Dark brown with tan head. Chocolate, coffee, some dark fruit. Smooth, lively, medium bodied. Sessionable. Now I want some Merkin!

Oatmeal Stout brimming with cocoa and espresso aromas. This beer features a rich, dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor - but not too roasted - with a creamy mouth feel and a nice dry finish. Overall, a very well balanced dry stout.

12oz bottle. Pours black, white head is almost nonexistent. Spotty lacing. Aroma is, yes, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is much the same. The most notable thing about this beer is the aptly named velvet mouthfeel. Pretty much as well balanced as a beer can be... perhaps too well balanced?

Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma is nice, roasted coffee. Taste is full on coffee and roasted malt. There?s very little bitterness on the back end. Surprising this wasn?t more bitter...but it?s a pleasant surprise.
