hazy copper hue with long lasting white head and okay lace. The aroma is very much hops and a lot of them, pine all over the place. Not much fruit on the nose of this one...hum? Good esters of oak, smoke, roasted malts and earthy yeast. The taste is what I expected bitter pine hops with solid base of malt, some wood comes through on the finish. Good full mouthfeel. Good, but not that good. A bit one-diminsional, where is the fruity components? Would like to age a bottle or two for rerate. A beer looking for it's identity. Thanks Raindog for the first bottle. hopscotch (11077) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - DEC 28, 2003
Hazy, amber ale with a white, frothy head.
The nose is of floral hops and citrus fruit.
Bitter flavor. Tastes like grapefruit rind. Not entirely pleasant.
Full-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation.
Lengthy, bitter finish. A very good beer to be sure, but not quite what I had hoped for from Fish Tale. Tastes like it was hopped just for the sake of hopping. Bittered just for the sake of bittering. I detected no wood in the aroma or flavor. egajdzis (6574) - Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 28, 2003
Hazy copper color with a tight, creamy, yellowish white head and beautiful lacing. Sticky hop aroma. Delicate hop taste with an oaky lingering aftertaste and a full mouthfeel. This was awesome, thanks TAR! ElGaucho (2401) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - DEC 23, 2003
Sweet, fruity, hoppy aroma that is reminiscent of sweaty testicles. Deep bright red body with yellow tangential hues. Lots of particles; murky. Great lace. Smoky and chalky initial mouthfeel. Almost tastes smoked, which likely comes from the oak barrel aging. The substantial 10% ABV is subdued. Wonderful. Very rich and complex. This is an exceptional elixir. Thanks Slikwily for hooking me up with this winner. iwantalambic (1478) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - DEC 21, 2003
12 oz: Deep red bronze, with an off white/tan head. Aroma blossoms with huge honey-caramel dipped pine cones, loads of sap, oranges, vanilla icing and buttered rum. Flavours are a bitter combination of caramel alcohol, dry hop flowers, and grapefruit. Palate is a bit thin and the carbonation is lacking, but the 100 IBU's are fairly even (amazingly) and offer a good flavour to celebrate the anniversary of a great brewery.

Medium amber color. Medium white foamy head. Aroma is malty, floral hops and a touch of wood. A full bodied double IPA. Malts are nutty, fruity and sweet. Hops are piney and grapefruity. Full and nearly chewy. Touches of oak, wood and smoke. The malt sweetness, 10 different hop bitterness and the 10% alcohol all “compare and contrast” extremely well. It is very smooth tasting for all those hops. Lots of underling complexity. Very nice beer. Happy anniversary Fish Tale! Here’s wishing you many more to come. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is bitter. GermanBrews76 (680) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - DEC 18, 2003
vibrant garnet body, a dense uniform head, awesome tan lace. Citrucy, biting, sweet, ripe, tart and alcoholic. some oaky notes, faint hints of yeastiness, some mint and spruce. VERY complex nose. Intensely bitter (of course) woody, chocolatey with some crisp minty hints. Great balance, 100 IBU's and 10% are sufficiently blended woth complexity and depth to create a pretty solid beer. Pours a wonderful magenta orange-pink. Bright, and transluscent. Bottle conditioned. Small white head. Lacing present. Aroma of limes, citrus, bitter pine hops, cherry malt, pears. Quite complex. Begins with an elegant mix of hops and malt and an interesting chewy, almost grainy texture. Pine hops, cherries. Very unique. Not overdone with anything (ok, maybe a bit too bitter hopped). Earthy flavors on the finish linger on. Alcohol well masked. Quite acidic and powerful. Will improve with age. Medium-full bodied, lightly carbonated. Would like more malt. jsquire (4483) - St. Marys, Ohio, USA - DEC 16, 2003
Clear dark amber out of the bottle with a foamy biege head and a sweet purfumey pine/citrus nose. Creamy mouthfeel but there is a strong hop burn on the tongue. Heavy brown sugar sweetness with a candied grapefruit rind bitterness. The alcohol sneaks up on you. The flavors seem sort of clumsy together, but it is a very good beer. Thanks to mreeves for my bottles. mreeves (276) - Sammamish, Washington, USA - DEC 14, 2003
Nice looking IPA, good dark golden color and nice carbonation. Aroma of hops and oak dominate, but the oak is subtler than I noticed with the Poseidon and Leviathan beers from Fish. I think the hops might balance it out, which is a good thing in my opinion. Excellent hop flavor, complex and tasty. Highly recommended.
