No Spaten or Paulaner but a good double anyway. It has the standard bock qualities and does all of them well enough. Malt and carmel aroma, sweet flavor with hidden alcohol. Skyview (6099) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - DEC 28, 2007
Sampled during ABR ’07 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pours a dark brownish amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that leaves behind a thin ring and film top. Aroma of dark roasted chocolate malt, some brown sugar, flowery hop character and a touch of toffee. Taste is medium to full bodied, light carbonation with flavors of chocolate, dark roasted chocolate malt, brown sugar and a touch of dark pitted fruits. Finish is malty with some dark pitted fruit in the aftertaste. Nice alcohol balance too. badgerben (5341) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - FEB 4, 2006
MN Winter Get Together, 2006: Growler courtesy of Robertsreality. Light brown color with no head. Malty aroma with some caramel notes. Sweet malt flavor with an alcoholic finish. Not syrupy at all. Solid dopplebock. auerbrau (3206) - Ithaca, New York, USA - MAR 13, 2005
UPDATED: MAY 7, 2006 (Originally rated 3/14/05) Dark deep black pour, with light brown soapy froth. Plain boring malty aroma. Extremely rich deep toasty malt with sweet nutty flavors. Alcohol is strong and stings the nose. A lite coffee and chocolate background in the finish. There’s a little wisp of port of brandy in the flavor complex. Aftertaste and smack is a little bit burnt and bitter. (Rated 9/8/05) 2004. Light dark cherry aroma. Deep dark orange tinged translucency. Even oily off-white head. Canteloupe! Strong first note. Morphs into a slightly sherried, mroe bourboned, with a background of cherries. Tough to finger. Alcohol adds a spicy kick on the back end. Creamy lucious mouthfeel, with a real full feeling and a lot of body. Crisp finish. A nice level of complexity to this beer that keeps the tounge on task. More flavorful than most dopplebocks. A touch of abbey fruitcake and spiced orange. Lingers with a tinge of fresh spearmine. Wow. A year makes this beer fantastic! ryanfolty (2611) - Bourbon County, Minnesota, USA - AUG 11, 2011

MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering ’06. Woody, somewhat faint bourbon aroma. Wonderful, reddish, orange dark body with no visible carbonation. Very little lace. Large bubble that looks like soapy dishwater...looks somewhat flat. Alcohol is stronger, smooth, somewhat flat. A little thin, maybe somewhat flat but not bad. footbalm (1219) - Western Minneapolis Suburbs, Minnesota, USA - FEB 5, 2006
Froma growler courtesy of Robertsreality. This was really nice and one of my favorites of the MN tasting.Rich sweet roasted malts with some toffee tossed in.Just a nice drinking brew. One that after each taste you catch yourself looking at the glass.Nice lingering flavor. detroiter (958) - Euphoria, Minnesota, USA - JAN 22, 2007
Pours a deep chocolate brown, topped by only a thin ring of foam. Sparse lacing. Looks flat but it isn’t. Chocolate malt and chocolate liquer in the aroma.
Quite the full flavor - bitter chocolate, plum, buckwheat, and brown sugar. It sounds like it is sweet, but really it is on the dry side, and very much in balance. A little vaporous alcohol is found in the finish. Medium to full body, lightly carbonated with the tiniest bubbles ever.
