Available in bottle and keg seasonally. Hook Island Red is a robust red Rye ale with Chinook, Columbus and Simcoe hops. A hefty 20% of the malt make-up is rye, lending dryness and spice notes to the brew. Combined with pine and passion fruit flavours of the American hops, this is a complex, idiosyncratic brew that is a special part of our range.

Bottle at home on 27th January 2017; received as gift. Deep reddish brown hazy body with yellowy white shallow foam. Yeasty aroma with citrus hops. Nutty malts and citrus hoppiness in-mouth make for a bitter overall taste, which continues into the finish before fading into fruitiness. Zingy mouthfeel and plenty of body. Superb.

330 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail. ABV is 6%. Dark reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of old orange marmalade, stale redcurrant jam and pine. Malty flavour with hints of rye bread, followed by hoppy notes of red berries, pine needles and resin.

330ml bottle (Ales by Mail) (6:4:6:3:12=3.1)
Pleasant enough spicy malty aroma, quite brown aley malts, nice rye aspects in the spiciness. Spicier rye-ier taste. Light palate, would be full, but the carbonation is quite crisp. Pleasant sweet roasty malts, a little husky and dusty, but pleasant spicy bitterness. Decent rich red, briefish small head. A touch rough, but nice to see rye-oriented beers with such character outside Estonia, home of my favourite rye beers.

330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Hazy chestnut color. Small size, beige head, stays. Caramel, sweet, some citrus in aroma. Citrus, grainy, yeasty, papery in taste. Citrus, caramel and bit papery in aftertaste. Citrus, bit papery in aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Medium bitterness. Drinkable brew.

Bubbly beige head stayed well on a murky, rustic body. Spicy aroma with dark fruit, demerara, malt & caramel. Medium to full bodied. Thick & creamy on the palate with a nice clean back. Much as the aroma, malts, spicy dark fruit, hints of sugar & a piney & yeast finish.

Keg Half Pint at London Brewers Market, Spitalfields, London, July 2016 - Mid Brown/Red in colour. Tan head. Malty; grainy rye malts, toffee. Spicy. Fruity; grapefruit and orange citrus. Hoppy; piney hops. Very Bitter. Very Dry. (2016-07-23)

Beerwithwings (292) - Hampshire, ENGLAND - JAN 2, 2017
Bottle. This is rather good. Has a nice hoppy taste and still has some rye spiciness.

stevoj (5866) - Boise, Idaho, USA - DEC 5, 2016
Draft at Euston Tap. Muddy brown pour, small tight head, lots of sticky lacing. Aroma is malt, molasses and some savory notes. Taste brings out the malts a bit more, brown bread, hoppy notes grow to a bitter finish. Smooth, yet sharp.
