On tap at the brewpub. Brown in color with a white head that does not last long. Mild carbonation. Has a dark roasted chocolate scent and a thick mouth feel. Surprising flavor of tropical fruit in a heavy syrup. possibly pears. Finishes rather hoppy. Strange and delicious for a style I generally don’t care for... jcnielsen (3412) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - APR 6, 2013
Sampled at Flat Branch. Pours a brown color with white head. Nutty, malty, roasty flavors. Decent brown. Silphium (3199) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - SEP 8, 2004
On tap at Flat Branch. This was my favorite beer at the brewery. Deep red-brown body with nary a head. Flavor was quite interesting with caramel, toast, dark fruit, nuts, and red grapes. A tasty, quaffable brown ale. DrnkMcDermott (3099) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - AUG 8, 2007
Draft sampler, 4 Aug. 07. Almost Porterish in color, though holding it to the light shows its brown edges. But, in fact, it actually tastes like what a lot of big brewers try to pass off as porters. A bit of toffee flavor, sticky with some smoky sweetness, and just a note of fruitiness. Could actually be my favorite beer here, just because it pushes the edge of its intended style. Very brown, with a ruby tint. Mild chocolat and roast aromas. Dry, chalky on the palate, with some chocolate, and maybe some spices, like cinnamon. Also a molasses component? A little on the thin side.

Rich and chewy, a really decent nutty brown ale. Nuts and toffee are predominant, with just a hint of hoppiness in the aftertaste. Has also a bit of a graham cracker crust kind of maltiness. Enjoyable! gregwilsonstl (2504) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - AUG 5, 2014
Brown color. Somewhat sweet. Nutty like pecan. Another refreshing brew from flat branch. sneagrams3 (2337) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - SEP 9, 2008
Tasted 9/7/08. Draft from the brewpub. Filtered with a dark amber hue. Good malt roast with a smooth finish. Fudgy and nutty. Went great with the meatloaf I had for dinner! boto (2211) - Granby, Connecticut, USA - APR 23, 2004
Draught: This pours a fairly clear brown color. There is a bit of a rapidly dying tan head. Not too much lacing. The aroma is somewhat sweet, with a hint of nutiness. Maybe some fruits, but very subdued. The taste is malty sweet and nutty. A hint of roastiness to it. The aftertaste is a bit dry also. topherh (1928) - Kearney, Missouri, USA - APR 14, 2008
Draft at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown with a beige head. Aroma of sweet malts. Flavor is nutty and a little sweet with a slightly bitter finish.
