4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ Sixgill, probably as a remnant from Seattle Beer Week. Pours thick deep inky black with thin mocha head. Aroma is roasty chocolate malt, sweet prunes and raisins, and heavy bourbon and smoke notes on the finish. Taste is likewise: rich, super heavy malt; vinous bourbon and chocolate flavor, and quite smoky on the finish. A bit of soy sauce too. Big rich body. This is a monster imperial stout, by any definition. The smoky flavor adds a different taste that is unlike most others in this category. Works well, hard to believe you could get this much flavor from just smoking the malt. I won’t complain.
Draft at brewery. Pours very dark, tan head. Aroma is raisins, oak, tannins and a little bit of smoke. Rich, thick, body. Wow! Smoke kicks in big-time in the finish, which actually does a lot to hide warming. Definitely an interesting take on hiding that 13% ABV. Not the best example of the style, but interesting to say the least. pdx77 (1483) - Oregon, USA - MAR 3, 2013
On draught at Flat Tail. Smoke and chocolate aroma and taste. Smoke is not to the offensive stage, pairs well with the chocolate stout notes.
