You may well have never heard of a Dinner Ale. They are, after all, extinct. So what were they? Well the clue is in the name. They were lowish gravity beers designed to be drunk around the domestic table during the family meal. This recipe comes from the original Camden Brewery, and dates from 1923.
With a dash of brown malt in the grist there is a hint of astringency on the finish of this quaffable ale that helps it drink heavier than itís modest 3.5%. Itís perfectly suited to washing down hearty English nosh.

Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 20th May 2014. Clear copper with off-white frothy foam. Mild agreeable malt aroma. Rich malt and leafy hops in-mouth with a developing, solidly bitter finish. Light texture and plenty of body. Well-crafted, very drinkable beer.

Cask at the Le Gothique Wandsworth Beer Festival on 29 March 2013. Poured a slightly hazy golden colour, with a halo of white head. Malty aroma, with some toffee and mild grassy hop. Initial flavours of straw, caramel and citrus zest. Finish was rather watery, some chewy malt and hop resin.

Light amber. Hazy amber. Light anglohop nose with a little caramel malts. Very light, toasty, some juiciness...just enough complexity.

Gravity cask at the Wandsworth Common London Beer Festival July 2013 - Le Gothique. Pours lightly hazy gold with a fine, creamy white head. Bready malt nose, some grainy bread. Light sweet flavor with further grainy bread, light bitter hay. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with basic bready malt character. So so.

Cask @ The Priory Arms. The pourís medium amber with a small white head. The nose is of a standard bitter. Some caramel, bread, twig etc. The taste is more of the same. Soft toffee and brown bread. Light wood, a touch of lemon zest on the finish. Unfortunately there were also some rough cardboard flavors. Notes of toasted tobacco. Light body, fine carbonation. Overall, a poor beer. Florence beers are bad, their Head In A Hat range is no different.
