COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Firsthand accounts describe an intense beast with a potent aroma and bite. Proof that the elusive monster exists? Or proof that brewing with five distinct varieties of hops creates an unbelievable, relentlessly hopped India Pale Ale? One taste and youll know, Swamp Ape is for real. Editor: if you have a black IPA in your hands, rate it under "Black Swamp Ape," not here...

Bottle from Eric and served in my GI IPA Tulip: Pours a clean deep golden/amber hue with an good head and some lace. The aroma smacks your alpha up with raw, rough and aggressive bittering hops and provides light tropical and apricot jammy fruit notes. Moderately dank, resiny and must I saw SWAMPY :-). Very light vapours of cotton candy, crystal and 6-row malts. Some pepper and clove esters too. The taste is almost as sharp and aggressive as the nose, very biting bitterness with dank earthy notes and plenty of hop spice undertones. A tad unbalanced and after half the bottle got to be a tad boring. No real malt character, just a lot of unfermented sugars. The mouth feel is pretty heavy for the genre, and as mentioned above quite aggressive with a heavy metallic and minerally finish. Must saw I have no desire to ever visit this one again but it was cool to try it once.<more akin to a sub-average American Barleywine than a DIPA>

The appearance of this bottled beer is a small ivory head that is mostly lasting, transparent amber body, fast rising carbonation observed, and spotty lacing. The aroma is citrus hops, pine hops, fruity, floral, grass, hoppy, earthy, sweet, and caramel malt. The flavor is moderately bitter, citrus hops, fruity, some of the ABV, sweet, malt, and a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel is lively carbonation and this beer is medium-full bodied. A very quaffable sipping beer. It has an enjoyable taste along with a bitter finish. It is a beer that I would drink again.

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2016 I enjoyed this DIPA and thought it was a good beer. Swamp Ape pours a cloudy, golden amber color with a healthy off-white head. It has a nice balance of taste and smell with a familiar high gravity aroma and bitter/sweet taste. The finish is hoppy, but smooth and ends with high gravity alcohol bite. Florida Beer good job!

At margaritaville, universal. Sure, the bad ratings for this come from the fact that this really comes across as more of a cross of a barley wine and a DIPA. The aroma lacks hops, maybe a bit of citrus, and is overly caramel. The flavor follows. The appearance is a Clear amber, white head. The finish is sweet, light citrus hops. Maybe a bit boozier than it should be. Still, I enjoyed this more than I expected.

Smells and tastes like a swamp ape. A great beer....if that is your thing. Experimental IPA barleywine gone wrong.

Draught at the brewery. Pours clear gold with a large, creamy white head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy citrus and fruity hops, cracker malt and apple esters. Flavor is moderate citrus and fruity hops and bitterness, cracker and honey malt, apple esters and a dry finish. Medium-full body and medium carbonation.

12 oz. bottle that I picked up while visiting a friend in Florida. Pours a hazy golden orange with a thin yellowish/white head that lasted through the first sip. The aroma is less hops and more malt than I was expecting with bread, oranges, and malt. The flavor is malt with some breadiness followed by oranges and grapefruit. Mild-moderate bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied.

Draft pour pint in Margaritaville. Clear golden pour with a quick fade head. Soft and sweet malt aroma. A ton of booze comes through here, and finishes with a bit of burn as a result. I expected this to be even stronger than it is. Malty. Not too bad, but just short of a pleasant IIPA.
