4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle bought 10/2010 at FS. Which lists the alcohol as 9.5%. What’s a few points between friends? Retains a nice strong ale nose from the bottle. Light roastiness, turning a little to sugar and just a hint of phenol, so I may have caught this just in time. A black color with a thin tan head, suggesting that should maybe have been listed as Imperial Porter. But tasting it, it does bring up some roast that more fits a stout. But quite mellowed. It has thickened up a bit with its heavy malt. Slight notes of cherry and peat. It even induces me to put an ear to the glass and hear its tiny bubbles fizz away. Worth the wait, but worth opening now, if you got one. Alcohol warmth fills in midway, still buoyed by lots of carbonation bubbles.
Bottle: Poured a deep black color ale with nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of residual sugar with light roasted malt notes is quite nice. Taste is also dominated by some residual sugar notes with some roasted malt. Some dark fruits are also noticeable. Body is quite full with good carbonation with no real apparent alcohol. Easy drinking with just enough complexity which makes for a nice night cap. Sparky (2244) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - JUL 31, 2014
Pours near black with a thin tan head. The nose is cocoa, roasted malt, dark fruits. The taste is ashy cocoa, burnt malts, molasses and dark fruits. Medium semi-creamy mouthfeel. 3.8 tmoreau (4670) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAY 13, 2014
Cellared bomber originally purchased at the brewery during Bryan’s tapping party back in 2010. Shared and poured to snifters showing some light ruby highlighting to the black/brown hue, with a decent layer of off white/light tan head foam, and waves & spots of lacing. The nose was dark fruit, roasted, with caramel & toffee. The flavor exposed dry, cocoa notes, with some coffee on the back, a bit of smoky astringency, a touch of caramel sweetness, but mainly dryness on the finish. Held up very well, with good warmth, and a pleasantly flavorful outcome. 9.5% Alc./Vol. on the label. cubs (10721) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 22, 2013

(22oz bottle) Pours an opaque black body with a small brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, leather, dark fruit, and caramel. Flavor of roasted malt, molasses, almond, chocolate, caramel, and some citrus. BBB63 (6567) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - JAN 5, 2013
Bottle aged over two years and served in a Duvel snifter which seems quite appropriate: Pours a very deep brown, near opaque with a fading tan head and very good lace, some oily legs as well. The aroma has notes of leather, pipe tobacco, toffee, burnt caramel, sea salt, anise, light smoke and char, some crabapple and raisin fruity esters along with a slightly port like vinous character. Rich dark malts, heavy earthiness and some dark fruits makes this a wonderful Barleywine now that aging has muted the hop character. Touch of molasses and liquorice twang. Slightly oxidized and hint of marzipan and tobacco like found in the classic Barleywines and English Strong Ales. None of those minty notes however, some herbal undertones. Lush and moderate biting mouth feel that would only be improved with a longer lasting finish. WOW, this took to the "cellar" very very well. I am impressed and this far exceeded my expectations. dmac (6496) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - JAN 5, 2013
