In short: A big hoppy nutty dark ale. Fun beerekoerper (599) - Iowa, USA - MAY 30, 2011
How: Bottle 22oz, black wax top, 2011 bottling. Consumed uber-fresh a few weeks after the bottling. Bottle sent to me by Sherm1016, thanks a lot Todd
The look: Uber-dark brown body topped by a large beige head with good retention and leaving good lacings.
In long: Nose is toasted nuts and dark cake along with a bunch of hops-related aromas (green herbs, pine-tree, etc.). Taste obviously has a lot of dark roasted malts. Some black chocolate, nuts,. light notes of roasted coffee beans, brownies, more nuts, caramel. Carbonation is a bit smooth. Hopping is far from over-the-top with moderate herbal and pine-tree bitterness. This is not the Black IPA I’m used to from the USA, the land of black IPAs. This is more like a big fat creamy nutty imperial brown ale with a generous amount of hops. * Overall the Black Magic was good. I’m into black magic myself, I can read minds and know what people are doing, hmmm…. you’re reading my right now.
Aroma is resiny/piny hops, some dark roast, malt sweetness. Pours black, not totally opaque, thick tan head with very good retention. Flavor: strong bitterness, piney hops, roast and caramel malts, some sweetness, lingering bitterness in the finish. Medium body, some sticky sweetness on the palate, medium carbonation. msojka (457) - New Jersey, USA - MAY 22, 2011
Pour is a dark brown color with a small head. Nose is pine and floral hops with a slight malt presence. Rather refreshing for the style with a piney aftertaste. Dfonorow (2250) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 14, 2011
Pour is translucent dark brown with a very small off-white head. Aroma is filled resin filled with notes of pine needles, burnt marshmallows, and flowers. Flavor and texture is extremely bitter with some roasted marshmallow and caramel undertones. Pine needles/floral finish. kassner (1684) - Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 17, 2011
I like the type and this beer, Coke color with a modest head and some lacing. Nice hops fragrance, a full mouth and spicy notes underneath the good level of hops.

dark brown color, fluffy off white head, some lace. nose is citric hops, but also roasty maliness. flavor was also hoppy, with some earthy and sweety malt and a hint of roastiness. medium bodied, bitter finish. the hint of sweetness was almost fruity and slightly off-putting to me. but still well worth the guzzle. sampled on tap at brewpub (my notes say on tuesday nov 3, 2009...i am a bit behind on my ratings evidently).. kramer (6682) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 21, 2010
22 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a small off-white head. Citrusy nose with chocolate and light roast. Fairly bright. The flavor is citrusy and bitter with more coffee than roast. Lingering dry earthy finish. Medium bodied with moderate fizzy carbonation. OK, but there’s a slightly weird dry and earthy finish that dominates a little too much and I don’t care for it a whole lot. juiceisloose (1506) - Windermere, Florida, USA - APR 27, 2010
Black waxed bomber courtesy Beerlando. This one pours a mostly clear, dark cola brown color and topped by a small, beige colored head of foam. The aroma is nice and hoppy showing notes of citrus, pine resin, and earthy characters to go with the dark bittered malt, dry cocoa, and a touch of roast. The flavor follows suit with the pine and earth hop bitterness up front along with notes of citrus and balanced out by dark cocoa, roasted caramel, dark malt. This one leans more to the bitter side as it should. Medium bodied with good carbonation and a dry, lingering pine bitter finish. This is a nice black ipa with good flavor. Bomber on bus trip for RBWG 2010. Pours a deep dark brownish black with a nice frothy head. Aroma is slightly oxidized charred malts, some chocolate and light roast with a grassy, citrusy hop character, light dankness, but some earthy spicy garlic as well. Flavor is columbus- garlic some stale dankness, earth, mineral, leather hints and a moderate bitter finish- hops seem way off on this one. Meh. mreusch (851) - Olathe, Kansas, USA - APR 1, 2010
22oz. bomber, silver specked black wax, with another thanks to FlssmrBrewAlum. Pours dark brown, black in the glass with a moderate creamy off-white head. Aroma is dominated by pine and resin, along with lesser notes of citrus, molasses and caramel. Flavor is more pine and resin, grass and earthy hops. A nice and tasty black IPA, thanks again Adam!
