I had a couple of mugs of this at the brewpub in lieu of lunch. (Hell. When one can afford either good beer or food, where’s the choice?) Brewmaster Bryan told me that in a literally blind taste test, only 60% of the tasters could tell which IPA had the dark malts. I believe him. The nose has a sturdy dosage of PNW hops. What gives it away to me is that instead of the typical caramel/toffee/pale malt scents oozing out from beneath, you get a slight whiff of roasty and chocolatey sweetness. In the flavor, the hops carry the load, but the malt backbone is smoother than usual, providing a counterpoint to the hoppy tastes and bitterness rather than the boost that one usually gets from the lighter sweetness. The bottom line, though, is that this tastes damned good, finishing on a bitter citric note with light chocolate undertones. Very nice. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - DEC 2, 2009
On tap at Flossmoor Station. Pours a deep and dark brown, almost black body with a finger-width, tannish brown, creamy head that dissipates at a moderate pace and leaves a clinging lace. Aroma has lots of bright, citrusy lemon and orange pines with a light resin. Some roast comes in slightly, but this aroma seems to lean more towards the hops. A thin caramel sweetness makes its way in there too. The flavor is quite nice. The roasts really come out more at the end, but stay relatively subtle. Lots of pines up front and into the finish where the roasts join up nicely for a dry, moderately bitter, resiny aftertaste that lingers for a long duration. Smooth and medium body with a great balance. Nothing seems over-the-top in the least bit. Overall, a very tasty black IPA. This is really a style I hope to see more of. Lots of pines and blending roasts made this highly enjoyable. hellbilly (3247) - scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA - DEC 27, 2009
UPDATED: FEB 21, 2010 another flossmoor from nbutler11 shared on 11/27/2009. this time it has black wax.
woody colored cola brown with an off white head and some light spots of lace.
in the nose... dirty, earthy spice hops are in the background while fresh leafy ones sting the sniffer. there are some grapefruit citrus notes, light pine and ashy smoke as well. neat.
what is tasted of sweetness is wiped out by leafy hoppy dryness. flavors of cola, pine, cocoa, light ash, peppery spice and grapefruit/citrus are noted before a dry bittered finish. pithy numbing...mmm.
the body is medium if not a little on the thin side but it is crisp and terribly easy to put away. 8/4/8/3/15/3.8

22oz. bomber, silver specked black wax, with another thanks to FlssmrBrewAlum. Pours dark brown, black in the glass with a moderate creamy off-white head. Aroma is dominated by pine and resin, along with lesser notes of citrus, molasses and caramel. Flavor is more pine and resin, grass and earthy hops. A nice and tasty black IPA, thanks again Adam! ekoerper (599) - Iowa, USA - MAY 30, 2011
Aroma is resiny/piny hops, some dark roast, malt sweetness. Pours black, not totally opaque, thick tan head with very good retention. Flavor: strong bitterness, piney hops, roast and caramel malts, some sweetness, lingering bitterness in the finish. Medium body, some sticky sweetness on the palate, medium carbonation. juiceisloose (1528) - Windermere, Florida, USA - APR 27, 2010
Black waxed bomber courtesy Beerlando. This one pours a mostly clear, dark cola brown color and topped by a small, beige colored head of foam. The aroma is nice and hoppy showing notes of citrus, pine resin, and earthy characters to go with the dark bittered malt, dry cocoa, and a touch of roast. The flavor follows suit with the pine and earth hop bitterness up front along with notes of citrus and balanced out by dark cocoa, roasted caramel, dark malt. This one leans more to the bitter side as it should. Medium bodied with good carbonation and a dry, lingering pine bitter finish. This is a nice black ipa with good flavor. kassner (1686) - Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 17, 2011
I like the type and this beer, Coke color with a modest head and some lacing. Nice hops fragrance, a full mouth and spicy notes underneath the good level of hops.
