UPDATED: JUN 17, 2011 A big thanks to Alex for this tasty treat. Pours clear mahogany with thin tan head. The aroma has smooth dark fruitiness, a nice load of rye spiciness and then a bit of booze heat. The taste is a wonderful mix of sweet dark fruitiness and spicy rye that blends into pervasive yet constrained yum! This stuff is smooth sweet spicy and wonderful. Thanks to pittsburgh kid...what a bonus beer! Reddish pour. Tan head. Aroma is awesome with fruit, maple syrup, spice cake, brown sugar and hops. Flavor is much the same. Rich and full bodies...brown sugar, toffee, caramel, hops...damn what a beer. Top notch. jtclockwork (16424) - , New Jersey, USA - AUG 2, 2010
Bottle with extreme thanks to not so Secret Santa Msante79. Amazing brew! Pours almost black with brownish hues and tan head. Nose is dark raisin, dark fruits and molasses. Wax-covered bomber; thanks Alex!!! Dense brown with trace tan head; aromas of rye spice, hops and brown sugar; some creamy orange peels too; medium body with lots of hops and rye spice mixed with some chocolate; wow, this sucker is crazy dry in the finish; caramel, rye, bitter orange and dried fruit; a hefty barleywine flavor-wise but a pretty smooth drinker in the end; damn good stuff

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2011 Bottle thanks to FlssmrBrewAlum! Thank alot, this was a mothers day gift for my mom who loves rye beers. She was nice enough to give me a 4 oz. pour. She said it was a 5/5, no hesitation. Now for my take. Pours a clear caramel brown with an off-white head. Aroma is full of sweet caramel, rye and an undertone of caraway. Flavor is nice caramel with a nice spice and rye undertone. Quite delicious. Drake (13635) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 28, 2010
Bottle shared by BrewEngingeer at the 12th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 9/18/10. Pours a clear plum color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of rye, toffee and an earthy finish. The taste is sweet toffee notes, bitter rye and a faintly hoppy finish. Medium-full bodied. One of the hits of the tasting for me, easily. Damn good beer. Thanks James! That1Guy (2236) - Colorado, USA - JUN 19, 2011
Crushed with Honkeybra. Smooth as hell. Incredibly deceptive with subtle flavors. Very malty but also perfectly balanced. Just a fantastic drinking experience. One of the best non-barrel aged barley wines out there. maxwelldeux (4374) - Snohomish, Washington, USA - APR 13, 2012
This has a really strong alcohol nose. It comes through much milder in the palate and makes for a nice biting taste. corby112 (2804) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 9, 2012
Pours a hazy dark copper color with amber edges and a half finger yellowish-beige head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind.
Complex nose with lots of earthy pine, grassy hops, spicy rye, leathery malt and dark fruit notes. The rye is really prominent slightly overpowering things but as it warms, there are hints of caramel malt, toffee, plum and fig.
Medium bodied with a dry, earthy hop presence that compliments the spicy rye very nicely. Again, the rye flavor dominates but there’s also some grassy pine needle bitterness that lingers throughout. Some needed sweetness underneath from the malt backbone that gives off some toffee, caramel, raisin and fig. Pretty complex and well balanced with leathery malt and faint booziness in finish. The high is ABV really well masked making this beer deceptively drinkable.
