Sampled at the brewpub. Dark brown with minimal foam. Rich fruity and malty aromas. Not enough to give nuances. Big flavors. Chocolate, with dark complex fruit, vanilla, oak, and alcohol. The ABV makes this quite hot. A lot going on here. crossovert (13833) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 26, 2013
Decent BA barleywine here. Not too sweet actually with notes of vanilla and oak adding to caramel and booze. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - NOV 14, 2012
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Flossmoor, IL). Pours a richer deep brownish hazy pour, darker, big haze, orangish glowing edges. A frothy tannish head atop dies to a film, ok lacing. Aromas are twisty toffee, toast, touches of biscuits, touches of florals. Gentle abv heat and a bigger oak presence, tannic and wet wood, some vanilla, heat, dry hops kind meld together with just a faint waft of marmalade and nut. Initial is medium bodied, just a touch thinned, showing toasty malts, biscuits, dark fruit. A mellow dry floral hop, middle shows heat, touches of thicker body, toffee and roast, growing raisin and dried fruit, kiss of orange. Heat, dryness, oak tannins, dry, woody, kiss of vanilla. Backend is a touch buttery oak quality now, some dryness, vanilla, oak, that buttery caramel, touches of deadened thinned sweetness. Not bad, oak does well here, firm flavors, good example of oak bringing a lot out. Flavorful, a bit hot.
