TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - APR 29, 2012
Draft on tap at the brewpub for Pre-DLD 2012(Flossmoor, IL). Pours a dark blackish pour, opaque and dark, with a frothy tan head, dies to a ring and laces small. Aromas are barrel essence, vanilla tannins and spirit, oak and vanilla, some heat. Bourbon, brown malts, some toffee come into the fold. Some cocoa, caramel, and biscuits. Nice, firm aromas yet not hot. Initial is medium bodied, a bit lighter offering a touch of brown malt and some caramel, toast, and roast up front, earthy brown malts, cocoa, some dark fruit. Barrel presence, oak, touches of spirit move into toast, toffee, biscuits in the immediate. Sweet and lingering with jabs of toast, toffee, and barrel flavors. Brown malts and the Pullman Reserve really reel this in. Some sweet sticky elements up front, toffee and some cherry, toffee, dark fruit, roast and toast. Really well put together, flavorful, and balanced. If you have a chance, go for it. Best beer of the day on tap.
