Poured a hazed dark orange with slight red.
Aroma is typical oktoberfest aroma of some mineral/mild sweet malt. There is also some mild breadiness ,mild fruit,as well as some smoke notes off and on (gets bigger as it warms)maybe a tinge of spice. Fresh yeast notes.
Taste is mirrored with aroma.Smoke is pretty noticable though more in taste with some standard oktoberfest taste ,some dryness and alchohol towards the finish, carmel, butter, some rind in the bitter.Finish was a little bit harsh. Rhindy citrus linger. I like bitter ipa’s but this seems bittered like a pale ale almost. I like it, but not the finish so much. Not real big on oktoberfests though. Good solid smokiness, more of a "long kiss" maybe even smoke "make-out" than just a kiss of smokiness.
Murky amber pour, cream colored head. Smoke, bread, caramel, toasted malt. Not bad but I would prefer just a tad less smoke. Still and interesting take on a marzen. fidelis83 (2396) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - FEB 19, 2013
Slightly hazy amber to copper pour with a 1 finger, creamy off white head. Smoke, sweet cereal, breadiness, and floral and spicy hops in the aroma. Flavor is woody smoke, iodine, sweet cereal, bread crust, toast, green woodiness, light vegetal notes (like cabbage and overcooked carrots) and some spicy and floral hops and mineral notes to the finish. LIght to medium body with a slick entry, moderate carbonation and slick, but slightly more dry finish. Ok, but it really doesn’t come together well, the mouthfeel and vegetal notes bring it down. zebra (2096) - Illinois, USA - JAN 12, 2013
maybe the first smoked Oktoberfest/Märzen i’ve had. but all smoke is not created equal, and this one was less equal than others. wlajwl (6738) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - DEC 16, 2012
Aroma is malts, fruit and a hint of smoke. The flavor is smoked malts, mild earthy notes and a mild tartness/tangy finish. csaso (2265) - Missouri, USA - NOV 4, 2012
Bottle - good size thick head, dark copper color, definite good size smoke aroma and flavor (not overpowering though), some sweet malt and fair hop balance TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - OCT 14, 2012
Big draft on tap at the release free as a mug clubber (Flossmoor, IL). Pours a richer well hazed murky pour. Deeper and darker, some orange copper hue, a bigger cakey offwhite head stays as a firm layer, laces ok. Aromas caramel and toast, biscuits and bready malts. Kiss of smoke, a touch woody, with a gentle kiss of meaty campfire. Gentle, mellow sweetness, kiss of dryness. Initial is medium bodied, a bit lighter wih some gentle sweetness. Bready and grainy malts, biscuits and a kiss of spice. Some dry grass and mellow earthy hops. A bit of spice, the middle shows some of that campfire smoke, earth and a touch of wood. Flavorful but light, complimenting well. It grows we move through middle and backend, gentle campfire and smoked wood, earth. Touches of dryness grow into the backend and finish. Gentle dry earthy hops, kiss of spice, lingering smoke and dryness overall. The smoke isn’t overdone (though I’d like it to be), but it lingers, grows a bit. Dryness, bready malts, and smoke of a firm variety. Very nice. Really like this one, a more campfire smoke really works well here. But I can see non-Smokeheads really enjoying this as well. Solid.
