0.33 l bottle from Craftbeer.de, best before May 2017. Clear, amber, quite a few chuncs floating, with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish, perfumy, slightly yeasty-spicy aroma of caramel, orange jam, dried apricot, candi sugar and some honey. Rather sweet, sugary, perfumy and yeasty-spicy taste of honey, orange jam, peach, vanilla, candi sugar, some clove and a bit of caramel, followed by a long, slightly bitter, yeasty-spicy, quite boozy and almost peppery finish. Medium to full body, slightly creamy and a bit effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. So finally got to try the German trappist. Not bad actually, but quite boozy, maybe better with some age on it. Overall not a good Tripel though.

0,33 l bottle from kappldav123. Thanks a lot mate! Okay, little bit over the BB date, maybe one years plus ... Sweet grain, some malt in the nose, bready. Hidden alcohol. Not really complex, like a little bit stronger "Landbier". Can not really convince.

Bottle at home. Cloudy orange colour, offwhite creamy head. Peach, orange, firm malty grainy, bready and sweet tones, quite alcoholic. Not too balanced. Firm body, medium carbonation.

Many thanks to kappldav123 for this bottle. The beer starts smooth and alcoholic-sharp. Not too sweet, more bitter with the nice blond and typical Abbey-Tripel sweetness. Till the end the beer gets more dry and bitter, the sweetness is still present, but a bitter-sry and slightly sharp aroma is dominating. On The tongue remains a sweetish-smooth and bitter-sharp flavour. Interesting, but a bit unround.

I was very surprised to learn that a thoroughly Belgian, top-fermented beer style is apparently made in Germany, as this is the closest beer they have to a trappist ale, made by Bitburger for the Mariawald abbey in the Eiffel region, Germanys only trappist abbey. Named after the 15th-century founder of the abbey, this beer indeed presents itself in much the same way as any Belgian abbey tripel would: yellowish pale beige, thinnish and eventually breaking head of somewhat irregular structure, a deep and warm orange blond colour with small yeast flakes floating around everywhere even after careful pouring; an aroma of toasted bread, cookie dough, candied orange, bourbon, hazelnut, grass, dust, mango, tomato, tobacco, banana, butterscotch, vanilla; and a fruity, malt sweet taste, with full and fluffy, soft mouthfeel, a bit oily, peach-like fruitiness in the onset, caramelly and nutty malt sweetness, a bit toasted in the end with a yeasty and herbally hop bitterish finish, through which some gin-like, warming alcohol pierces without becoming astringent. Tasted blind, I would have identified this as being Belgian, but certainly not as being German. Putting beer culture stereotypes aside, I think this is indeed a very fine and decent tripel. Surprising find, thanks to Filip for bringing me the bottle all the way from Germany.

0.33l bottle from trade with and courtesy of kappldav123. Thanks man! In the glass this is a cloudy deep dark golden one - almost a little copper colored and it has a nice big lasting off-white and lacing head. Its also loaded with a ton of floaters and sediments swimming about in the glass. On the one I get a good amount of dark caramel sweetness combined with grains, floral water, soft metal, a nice dark fruitiness and hints of alcohol. It has a kinda sticky and oily feeling in the mouth and its just about average on the big bubbles. Tastes nice. Kinda on the sweeter side of the scale I will say. Lots of sweet fruit elements here with caramel and a nice nit to sharp warming alcohol tingling in the aftertaste. A nice not to complicated trippel. Thanks for the bottle! 10.05.2014
